Ralph Northam (D-VA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/governor-who-wore-blackface-demands-investigation-into-alleged-racism-at-virginia-military-institution\">called<\/a> for an investigation of alleged racism at the Virginia Military institute.<\/p>\n<p>The Hill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/521790-governor-orders-investigation-into-racism-at-virginia-military-institute\">reported<\/a>\u00a0at the time that Northam and others sent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/context\/letter-from-virginia-gov-ralph-northam\/db652d21-6c0e-4392-abd3-56ea90b4bd9e\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\">a letter<\/a>\u00a0to VMI\u2019s Board of Visitors announcing an \u201cindependent, third-party review\u201d of the college after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/northam-calls-for-vmi-investigation-after-black-cadets-describe-relentless-racism\/2020\/10\/19\/6fcb21a8-1229-11eb-ba42-ec6a580836ed_story.html\">reports<\/a>\u00a0of racism surfaced in The Washington Post. Among the allegations are \u201cstructural racism,\u201d an accusation that a professor described her family\u2019s history as Ku Klux Klan members in positive terms, and alleged threats of lynching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack cadets at VMI have long faced repeated instances of racism on campus, including horrifying new revelations of threats about lynching, vicious attacks on social media, and even a professor who spoke fondly of her family\u2019s history in the Ku Klux Klan\u2014to say nothing of inconsistent application of the Institute\u2019s Honor Code,\u201d the officials wrote in the letter. \u201cThis culture is unacceptable for any Virginia institution in the 21st century, especially one funded by taxpayers,\u201d the letter continues. \u201cVirginians expect all universities\u2014and particularly public universities established by the General Assembly\u2014to be welcoming and inclusive, and to eschew outdated traditions that glamorize a history rooted in rebellion against the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That investigation has now concluded, The College Fix <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/virginia-military-institute-looks-to-add-racial-sensitivity-training-diversify-itself\/\">reported<\/a>, and \u201cdid not identify conclusive violations of Title VI or Title IX,\u201d federal statutes against racial and sexual discrimination, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The report did, however, find that \u201cseveral cadets and alumni reported that they believe minorities and women are promoted over more qualified white male candidates in order to fill diversity quotas,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>The report remained committed to increasing diversity at VMI, however, with the Barnes &#038; Thornburg law firm, which conducted the investigation, stating in the report that \u201cVMI has also traditionally been run by white men, for white men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVMI\u2019s overall unwillingness to change\u2014or even question its practices and traditions in a meaningful way\u2014has sustained systems that disadvantage minority and female cadets and faculty, and has left VMI trailing behind its peer institutions,\u201d the law firm wrote in its report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf VMI refuses to think critically about its past and present, and to confront how racial and ethnic minorities and women experience VMI, it will remain a school for white men,\u201d the firm added.<\/p>\n<p>As the Fix noted, VMI\u2019s Board of Visitors released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vmi.edu\/news\/headlines\/2020-2021\/vmi-board-of-visitors-reviews-report-recommendations.php\">a statement<\/a> at the start of the month saying it will implement the law firm\u2019s recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoard members determined that most of the recommendations contained in the report should be pursued and have instructed the administration to determine the feasibility of implementation,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the recommendations include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>VMI create \u201cmeasurable goals such as increased diversity in the corps of cadets and faculty.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em> VMI create \u201cmeasurable goals to recruit, maintain, and promote minority and female administrators, faculty, and staff.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>VMI should \u201ccontinue to reduce the emphasis on traditions and iconography associated with the Civil War\/Confederacy, to be replaced by other traditions and historical associations, including those that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>VMI should design and implement sensitivity and bystander training for cadets (including incoming cadets) focused on racism, racial slurs, racial jokes, and racial stereotypes.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>VMI should, with the involvement of the chief diversity officer, design a campaign to encourage reporting of misconduct beyond simply making mechanisms and opportunities available.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
