American\u2019s schedule seems too big for the crew they have available, especially since they\u2019re only midway through the process of bringing inactive pilots back online.\u201d The site added that due to government subsidies, the airline couldn\u2019t furlough anyone, but they \u201cdidn\u2019t keep those pilots who were staying home active and qualified to fly. And they\u2019re not all back yet, either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/21\/american-airlines-cancels-flights-due-to-staffing-maintenance-issues.html\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> high cancellation numbers for the airline:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"23\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>About 6% of the airline\u2019s mainline schedule, or 190 flights, were canceled on Sunday, according to flight-tracking site FlightAware. The airline said that equaled about 3% of its total flights, including those operated by regional carriers. An internal company list, which was viewed by CNBC, showed about half of those were because of unavailable flight crews. On Saturday, about 4% of\u00a0its\u00a0mainline\u00a0schedule, or 123 flights, were canceled and\u00a0106 on Monday, FlightAware showed. <\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>American said it is trimming its overall schedule by about 1% through mid-July to help ease some of the disruptions, some of which it said resulted from bad weather at its Charlotte and Dallas\/Fort Worth International Airport hubs during the first half of June.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Travel has significantly increased in the United States since this time last year, with over 2 million people going through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/coronavirus\/passenger-throughput\"><span class=\"s1\">Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints<\/span><\/a> on Sunday, and numbers breaking the 2 million mark during the weekdays last week. During the same dates in 2020, there were just over 500,000 people going through the checkpoints.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/american-airlines-asks-workers-to-volunteer-for-no-pay-during-summer-travel-surge\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>, the airline asked its own headquarters employees at Dallas-Forth Worth International Airport to volunteer for no pay during a travel surge over the summer months.<\/p>\n<p>According to the the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/business\/2021\/06\/07\/american-airlines-is-asking-employees-to-volunteer-to-help-with-the-summer-rush\/#\">Tampa Bay Times,<\/a> American Airlines isn\u2019t making its workers volunteer, but if they do give up their time, they won\u2019t be paid for the additional effort. They also must work the extra hours when they are not carrying out their regular requirements.<\/p>\n<p>They will mostly provide assistance to airline customers who need help. \u201cThe volunteers will be there to supplement full-time workers such as gate and ticketing agents, and the airline is only expecting to use the volunteers during the busiest period, from June until mid-August,\u201d the outlet noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/american-airlines-asked-its-corporate-workers-to-volunteer-at-airport-2021-6\"><span class=\"s1\">Business Insider<\/span><\/a> reporting earlier this month, American Airlines sliced 30% of its staff, which involved firing around 1,500 people.
