We do not see demand softening in the near future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Data show that Americans are purchasing firearms at record levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to a National Shooting Sports Foundation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nssf.org\/articles\/taking-stock-of-record-setting-2020-firearm-year\/\"><span>report<\/span><\/a><span> released in January:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><span>Twenty-one million background checks were conducted for the sale of a firearm over the past 12 months. That topped 2019\u2019s totals of 13.2 million by 60 percent. It also shattered the previous record from 2016, when 15.7 million background checks were conducted for the sale of firearms. This year\u2019s 21 million total surpassed 2016 by 5.3 million, or 34 percent\u2026 NSSF estimates that 8.4 million people bought a firearm for the first time in 2020. That\u2019s 40 percent of all purchases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The group noted that the firearms market is becoming \u201cincreasingly diverse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cForty percent of 2020\u2019s buyers were women and the biggest increase of any demographic category was among African Americans, who bought guns at a rate 58 percent greater than in 2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The ammunition and firearm shortages occur amid a recovering consumer economy in the United States, a crime wave that began after the death of George Floyd, and a series of promises from President Biden to more harshly restrict gun purchases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For instance, a statement from the White House released in April <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2021\/04\/07\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-initial-actions-to-address-the-gun-violence-public-health-epidemic\/\"><span>reads<\/span><\/a><span>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14\">\n<p><span>President Biden is reiterating his call for Congress to pass legislation to reduce gun violence. Last month, a bipartisan coalition in the House passed two bills to close loopholes in the gun background check system. Congress should close those loopholes and go further, including by closing \u201cboyfriend\u201d and stalking loopholes that currently allow people found by the courts to be abusers to possess firearms, banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, repealing gun manufacturers\u2019 immunity from liability, and investing in evidence-based community violence interventions. Congress should also pass an appropriate national \u201cred flag\u201d law, as well as legislation incentivizing states to pass \u201cred flag\u201d laws of their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>President Biden also nominated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/5-things-gun-owners-need-to-know-about-bidens-new-gun-control-czar\"><span>David Chipman<\/span><\/a><span> \u2014 a gun control lobbyist who spent nearly three decades working for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms \u2014 to lead the agency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During his confirmation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/watch-bidens-atf-pick-provides-his-definition-of-an-assault-weapon-his-proposed-ban-would-outlaw-most-rifles-in-america\"><span>hearing<\/span><\/a><span>, Chipman seemed to define an \u201cassault weapon\u201d as \u201ca semi-automatic rifle capable of accepting a detachable magazine with a round greater than a .22 caliber.\u201d As Sen.
