He was booked for assault on a public official and resisting an officer and held at the Santa Rita Jail. His bail was set at $35,000. A woman claiming to be Chaumette\u2019s sister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcbayarea.com\/news\/national-international\/newsom-assaulted-by-aggressive-man-on-oakland-street\/2573843\/\">told<\/a> the Associated Press he is homeless and mentally ill, and that the accusation was \u201cconsistent with his past behavior.\u201d The jail\u2019s booking log, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/2021\/06\/18\/chp-gov-newsom-assaulted-by-aggressive-person-in-oakland\/\">reportedly<\/a> listed Chaumette\u2019s occupation as \u201cpumping gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred at 10:46 a.m. on Thursday while the governor visited the area to promote support for small businesses impacted by the pandemic and the state\u2019s reopening. Newsom did not appear to have been injured or disturbed by the confrontation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Governor was approached by an aggressive individual,\u201d a CHP statement said. \u201cMembers of the Governor\u2019s security detail removed the Governor from the situation and the individual was arrested by CHP officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The East Bay Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastbaytimes.com\/2021\/06\/18\/chp-gov-newsom-assaulted-by-aggressive-person-in-oakland\/\">reported<\/a>, \u201cA group of TV news journalists and newspaper reporters nearby heard the commotion,\u201d but \u201conly saw the governor\u2019s CHP security detail detaining the man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some published accounts said Chaumette allegedly threw a water bottle at Newsom, but according to the San Francisco Chronicle, CHP officer Custodio Lopez did not confirm that information.<\/p>\n<p>The Chronicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/crime\/article\/Berkeley-man-arrested-for-assaulting-Newsom-in-16257732.php\">reported<\/a>, \u201cNewsom shrugged off the encounter with reporters afterward, saying it was \u2018just a gentleman who wanted to say hello. And we all have our different ways of expressing ourselves. And he certainly made an impact. It\u2019s the nature of life.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chaumette has an arraignment hearing set for Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom went on to make appearances at the Beastmode Barbershop, then two doors down at Graffiti Pizza, where news photographers captured images of the governor spinning dough and eating a slice.<\/p>\n<p>The governor has been trying to rebuild his image and raise funds to defend himself against a special recall election expected this fall. Newsom has raised nearly $16.5 million, about twice as much as all of his Republican challengers combined. Netflix co-CEO and chairman Reed Hastings has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/netflixs-reed-hastings-gives-3-million-to-a-fund-opposing-newsom-recall\">donated<\/a> more than $3 million in support of Newsom.<\/p>\n<p>The Chronicle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/Newsom-s-recall-fundraising-edge-becomes-a-16256317.php\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"24.594594594595\">\n<p><em>The governor has been boosted by a\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/Wealthy-donors-help-fund-Newsom-s-anti-recall-16093231.php\">cash infusion from mega donors<\/a>, including labor unions, the Democratic Party, big tech billionaires, tribal communities and real-estate developers \u2014 a broad coalition that melds both traditional progressive donors and business interests.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Several factors have helped boost Newsom\u2019s advantage: For starters, he can raise unlimited funds to fight a recall; state contribution limits don\u2019t apply to recalled officeholders. Donors to his Republican challengers, on the other hand, are limited to the normal $32,400 maximum per campaign.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Newsom\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/Better-than-manna-from-heaven-Huge-16175564.php\">has also benefited<\/a>\u00a0as California emerges from the coronavirus pandemic with a booming economy and an unexpected $75.7 billion budget surplus.
