But this royally sucks,\u201d Walter Shaub, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics, wrote on Twitter. \u201cI\u2019m disgusted. A lot of us worked hard to tee him up to restore ethics to government and believed the promises. This is a a real \u2018f\u2014 you\u2019 to us\u2014and government ethics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPathetic!\u201d Shaub continued. \u201cThe responses from people who spent 4 years complaining the other side was putting party over country are pathetic. They sound just like MAGAs. The jobs went to privileged kiddos with mommies &#038; daddies who cozied up to POTUS. Nepotism is illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.8854489164087\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pathetic! This is ridiculous. What a f\u2014ing failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen little problems like this, which are so damn easy to avoid, crop up, it\u2019s a sign of much bigger rot. Because if you can\u2019t even do the easy things, you sure as hell can\u2019t do the hard things,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe White House\u2019s defense that they had the minimum qualifications is total BS. The issue isn\u2019t whether they were qualified (some weren\u2019t). It\u2019s that a WH that promised diversity is giving these privileged white kids with connected mommies and daddies prime jobs over others!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd all the whataboutism from tweeps defending this total BS is just giving fuel to the next corrupt authoritarian like Trump who wins the White House to say \u2018if even Biden was fine with nepotism in his administration, I can do anything,&#8217;\u201d he continued. \u201cSo what if WH claims the parents weren\u2019t involved. I\u2019m sure some wink-nudged this. But I\u2019m even more sure they didn\u2019t HAVE TO be. The head of Presidential Personnel knew the score. If you believe this is a coincidence, I have a bridge to sell you. I have 3 bridges to sell you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo I sound bitter? HELL, YEAH, I\u2019M BITTER! I\u2019m the stupid moron who fell for his false promises. I wasn\u2019t na\u00efve enough to think he\u2019d be a transformative president. He told us he\u2019d be plain vanilla. But I thought there was momentum behind his ethics promises. Boy was I stupid,\u201d he continued. \u201cTake his much touted \u2018golden parachute payment\u2019 ban. Exciting, right? Turns out, it only applies if the payment is expressly for going into the UNITED STATES government. If the payor says \u2018I\u2019m giving this to you because you\u2019re going into govt,\u2019 they can keep it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn two decades of govt ethics, I\u2019ve only ONCE seen a payment for going in to the U.S. govt. But I\u2019ve seen plenty offered for going into govt. And the people who drafted this sham prohibition new [sic] no one would ever offer a payment expressly for going into the U.S. govt,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd it only bans CASH or something substituting for an agreed upon payment. It does NOT ban an employer saying, \u2018we normally make folks forfeit unvested stock options, but we\u2019ll let you keep your millions in options because you\u2019re going in the US govt.\u2019 THAT\u2019S ALLOWED!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOr how about this? Biden\u2019s ethics pledge bans appointees working on matters involving former employers and clients. This month, the administration quietly issued guidance saying it doesn\u2019t apply to clients that paid for speeches!!!! Yellen, for instance, made $7 million that way,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe guidance also quietly said it doesn\u2019t apply if a news channel paid you to appear on TV. You can work directly with them. But remember how made we were when the Trump admin gave waivers to former Fox News personalities? Welp, here we go again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I don\u2019t love having a milk lobbyist running USDA or a \u2018strategic advisor\u2019 (i.e., shadow lobbyist) running the State Department. Or the brother of Biden\u2019s top WH advisor lobbying the Executive Office of the President through a firm the Biden appointee founded,\u201d he continued. \u201cI miss the days when Obama appointed Norm Eisen to be his ethics Czar. Biden chose not to do that. Surely, he could have found someone like Norm\u2013only this time maybe someone not white and male for a change\u2013to champion ethics in this admin. But here we are with problems already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a Raytheon board member leading DOD. We\u2019ve got private equity fund people in the WH and at State,\u201d he continued. \u201cYou\u2019ve got corporate execs and big firm lawyers who represent corporations throughout.
