Their advocacy has launched small town CRT debates onto the national stage, prompted anti-CRT legislation from Republican lawmakers and more.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A parent-led rebellion against Critical Race Theory is storming school boards across the country and demanding accountability for what is being taught to American children.<\/p>\n<p>At least 165 local and national groups have formed to combat Critical Race Theory (CRT) instruction in schools across the U.S., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/wealthy-loudoun-county-virginia-parents-face-threats-battle-over-equity-n1269162\">an NBC analysis found<\/a>. Many of these groups were founded by parents appalled to discover what was being taught to their children. Their advocacy has launched small town CRT debates onto the national stage, spurring far-left activists and establishment media outlets to accuse conservatives of ignorance and in some cases, racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents are right to revolt against critical race theory in the classroom,\u201d senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and anti-CRT writer Christopher Rufo told the Daily Caller News Foundation. \u201cChildren are not inherently \u2018oppressors\u2019 and should not be implicated for historical crimes on the basis of their race. That\u2019s the kind of propaganda that belongs in a Soviet history museum\u2014not American K-12 classrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>What Is Critical Race Theory?<\/h3>\n<p>CRT holds that America is fundamentally racist, yet it teaches people to view every social interaction and person in terms of race. Its adherents pursue \u201cantiracism\u201d through the end of merit, objective truth and the adoption of race-based policies.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/04\/arkansas-critical-race-theory-asa-hutchinson\/\">(RELATED: Arkansas Governor Approves Ending Critical Race Theory Education For State Agencies)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoyAnnReid\/status\/1403317049338863622\">Proponents<\/a>\u00a0of CRT\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbar.org\/groups\/crsj\/publications\/human_rights_magazine_home\/civil-rights-reimagining-policing\/a-lesson-on-critical-race-theory\/\">defend the theory<\/a> by saying that it offers needed critiques of \u201chow the social construction of race and institutionalized racism perpetuate a racial caste system that relegates people of color to the bottom tiers.\u201d In the aftermath of the death of George Floyd, elements of CRT have begun to appear in schools across the nation, identifiable through <a href=\"https:\/\/americarenewing.com\/issues\/list-critical-race-theory-buzzwords\/\">buzzwords<\/a> such as \u201csystemic racism,\u201d \u201cracial equity,\u201d \u201canti-racism,\u201d or \u201cimplicit bias.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchool systems are teaching material that affirms Critical Race Theory\u2019s main ideas when they recommend teachers \u2018decolonize\u2019 their curriculum by counting the races of different textbook authors,\u201d Jonathan Butcher, a Will Skillman Fellow in Education at The Heritage Foundation, told the DCNF, referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/dcps.dc.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/dc\/sites\/dcps\/page_content\/attachments\/Exploring%20Your%20School%20Landscape%20from%20an%20Equity%20Lens.pdf\">Washington, D.C. school equity materials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Butcher also highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/equitablemath.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/1_STRIDE1.pdf\">school districts<\/a> \u201casking teachers to adjust homework assignments according to a child\u2019s skin color,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowacityschools.org\/site\/default.aspx?PageType=3&#038;ModuleInstanceID=33200&#038;ViewID=5C8B25C6-C8F8-4BD5-923B-8A7C70A93DDA&#038;RenderLoc=0&#038;FlexDataID=51505&#038;PageID=18732&#038;Comments=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teaching<\/a> \u201cthat Americans who are white have unfair privileges and the \u2018legacy of white supremacy endures,&#8217;\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/03\/07\/education-dept-curbs-decision-on-race-based-affinity-groups\/\">separating<\/a> students \u201cinto affinity groups by race for school activities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs state lawmakers consider the issue, policymakers should say that no public institution can compel any teacher or student to affirm or profess belief in any idea that violates the Civil Rights Act, including the idea that individuals should receive certain benefits or sanctions based on the color of their skin,\u201d Butcher said.<\/p>\n<p>Parents across the nation have been appalled to see elements of CRT taught to their children, activists told the DCNF, but the content can be difficult to define or track down. Like <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/11\/09\/austin-sex-education-texas\/\">progressive gender ideology<\/a> taught to students in <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/07\/08\/california-sexual-education\/\">sex education<\/a>, elements of CRT are not only present in equity programs but have also seeped into other elements of public school programs.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"qu\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"gridcell\" translate=\"no\"><span class=\"gD\" data-hovercard-id=\"erika@defendinged.org\" data-hovercard-owner-id=\"109\">Parents who report CRT in schools often aren\u2019t able to put a name to the alarming practices they are seeing implemented, <\/span><\/span>Parents Defending Education Director of Outreach <span class=\"qu\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"gridcell\" translate=\"no\"><span class=\"gD\" data-hovercard-id=\"erika@defendinged.org\" data-hovercard-owner-id=\"109\">Erika Sanzi told the DCNF<\/span><\/span><span class=\"qu\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"gridcell\" translate=\"no\"><span class=\"gD\" data-hovercard-id=\"erika@defendinged.org\" data-hovercard-owner-id=\"109\">, but they come with stories of students being separated by race during the school day or young students being forced to label their social identities. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/11\/opponents-critical-race-theory-diversity\/\">(RELATED: Meet The Opponents Of Critical Race Theory The Media Does Not Want You To See)<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren are suddenly needing to lay out their race, their gender, their sexual orientation, their nation of origin, their religion, whether or not they identify as the sex they were born with,\u201d Sanzi said, \u201cand then they learn that all of these identities either fall into it to be a category of like an oppressor or oppressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>School districts, such as Loudoun County Public School Systems, often side-step parent\u2019s accusations by pretending the problem does not exist \u2014 by insisting that they are not implementing CRT. But parents and activists say that the elements of CRT are evident in trainings, in classes, in conversations about diversity and equity and in reading materials that are chosen for class, such as books by critical race theorists like Ibram X Kendi and Robin DiAngelo.<\/p>\n<h3>Parents Take A Stand Against Critical Race Theory<\/h3>\n<p>On June 4, Californians for Equal Rights Foundation (CFER) <a href=\"https:\/\/cferfoundation.org\/pusds-dishonesty-exposed\/\">organized a rally<\/a> to protest outside a Poway Unified School District (PUSD) meeting. Parents and activists specifically took issue with the school\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powayusd.com\/en-US\/Departments\/Learning-Support\/Racial-Equity-Inclusion\/Racial-Equity-Inclusion\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Racial Equity &#038; Inclusion plan<\/span><\/a>, as well as its <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1GCxGCBB6DPElpcM_W8CsIgEjgplz_bncsPaArBCcKQ0\/edit\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Ethnic Studies<\/span><\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Cf0K2laln2vhjS45wilKhWIsFE3uCesEK3vRBHtATcQ\/edit\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Ethnic Literature<\/span><\/a>\u00a0courses.<\/p>\n<p>In a press release, CFER said that PUSD includes the writings of CRT theorists like Kendi, \u201cpropagating a hypothesis that system racism permeates US society\u201d and \u201cadvocating student activism as central to its curriculums.\u201d The activist group criticized PSUD officials for denying that the school teaches CRT, calling this dismissal \u201cdishonest\u201d and intended to \u201cinsult genuine grassroots opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPUSD\u2019s proposed Ethnic Studies and Ethnic Literature curriculums are full of well-known CRT buzzwords and concepts like systemic oppression, intersectional identities, and \u2018anti-racism,\u2019 with the content focused on someone\u2019s \u2018lived experiences\u2019 rather than on data, evidence, or objective measures,\u201d CFER President Frank Xu said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis CRT-based content is intended to indoctrinate students with a politicized and divisive ideology demanding race-based equal outcomes,\u201d he added. \u201cRace-based treatment is completely contrary to our Constitutional guarantees of equal treatment and equality before the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo defend our Constitution, and these guarantees that facilitated our national progress, we must oppose all theories and practices that promote a race-based worldview,\u201d Xu said.<\/p>\n<p>Parents in Loudoun County, Virginia, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/06\/14\/loudoun-county-parents-rally-against-critical-race-theory-indoctrination\/\">rallied Saturday<\/a> to protest against the school district\u2019s increasingly divisive CRT policies. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/loudoun-teachers-target-parents-critical-race-theory-hacking\">Daily Wire reported in March<\/a> that current and former teachers and parents in Loudoun formed a group called \u201cAnti-Racist Parents of Loudoun County\u201d and compiled a long list of parents who the group suspected disagreed with the school\u2019s progressive agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, parents continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/10\/loudoun-county-parent-communist-china-critical-race-theory\/\">emotionally condemn<\/a> the school for its policies in public meetings, clips of which often go viral.<\/p>\n<p>These incidents are prompting parents to turn to activism groups \u2014 or become activists themselves. Across the country, activist groups have sprung up, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/1776projectpac.com\/\">1776 Project PAC<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southlakefamilies.org\/\">Southlake Families in Texas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edfirstnc.org\/\">Education First Alliance<\/a> in North Carolina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.awakeil.com\/\">Awake Illinois<\/a>\u00a0and the Virginia groups <a href=\"https:\/\/fightforschools.com\/\">Fight for Schools<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/joinsuva.com\/\">Stand Up Virginia.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe they don\u2019t know how to get it in the right hands, but we do,\u201d Parents Defending Education President Nicole Neily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fb8xtmhShGs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said in March<\/a> of the parents clamoring to expose the progressive content. \u201cWe know a lot of reporters, and we\u2019re happy to share those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Pennsylvania, Elana Yaron Fishbein pulled her children out of Gladwyne Elementary School when she found that the school was teaching them about privilege and justice during the last week of classes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/wealthy-loudoun-county-virginia-parents-face-threats-battle-over-equity-n1269162\">NBC reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fishbein <a href=\"https:\/\/noleftturn.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/SUPT-Copland.pdf\">sent<\/a> a letter to the school superintendent accusing the school of carrying out a \u201cplan to indoctrinate the children into the \u2018woke\u2019 culture.\u201d When she didn\u2019t hear back, she launched her own organization to safeguard education: <a href=\"https:\/\/noleftturn.us\/about-us\/\">No Left Turn in Education<\/a>. The group grew rapidly after she discussed her experiences on Tucker Carlson Tonight and now has 30 chapters in 23 states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe schools have been hijacked,\u201d she said, according to NBC. \u201cOur kids are captive audiences. And they think they can do whatever they want with our kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Republicans Take Action Against CRT<\/h3>\n<p>Local outrage against CRT has spread to state lawmakers, to governors and in some cases, to Capitol Hill. Republican lawmakers across the country have begun passing legislation banning CRT in schools: Florida\u2019s state Board of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/florida-race-and-ethnicity-government-and-politics-education-74d0af6c52c0009ec3fa3ee9955b0a8d\">banned<\/a> CRT from classrooms as recently as Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can put lipstick on a pig and it\u2019s still a pig,\u201d Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has frequently <a href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/2021\/06\/14\/florida-bans-critical-race-theory-its-classrooms\">condemned CRT<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/21\/gov-desantis-critical-race-theory-lipstick-pig-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> in May. \u201cIt\u2019s offensive to the taxpayer that they would be asked to fund critical race theory, that they would be asked to fund teaching kids to hate their country and to hate each other.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/31\/critical-race-theory-academic-antiracism-public-schools-christopher-rufo\/\"><b>(RELATED: The New Left\u2019s Institutionalized Racialism Is \u2018Everywhere.\u2019 In Medicine, Education, Even In Government Labs. Here\u2019s How It Happened<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Idaho <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/29\/idaho-governor-brad-little-ban-critical-race-theory-public-schools\/\">became<\/a> the first state to ban CRT in April through <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/sessioninfo\/2021\/legislation\/H0377.pdf\">House Bill 377<\/a>, the \u201cDignity And Nondiscrimination In Public Education,\u201d which prohibits public schools and universities from compelling students to \u201caffirm, adopt, or adhere to\u201d teachings often found in CRT instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump\u2019s Office of Management and Budget director Russ Vought <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/11\/toolkit-combats-critical-race-theory-russ-vought\/\">launched an anti-CRT toolkit only<\/a> last week to help parents identify and combat elements of CRT in their children\u2019s schools.<\/p>\n<p>Vought, who leads\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/citizensrenewingamerica.com\/\">Citizens for Renewing America<\/a>, explained to the DCNF that because CRT sometimes operates subtly, the guide equips parents to be on the alert for <a href=\"https:\/\/americarenewing.com\/issues\/list-critical-race-theory-buzzwords\/\">buzzwords<\/a> such as \u201canti-racism,\u201d \u201canti-bias training,\u201d \u201canti-blackness,\u201d \u201canti-meritocracy,\u201d \u201cobtuse meritocracy,\u201d \u201ccollective guilt,\u201d \u201ccolorism\u201d and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis guide is meant for anyone of any knowledge and experience level who is concerned about what children are being taught and how they are being treated,\u201d the tool kit begins, \u201cwith an emphasis on making the banning of Critical Race Theory (CRT) the central theme by which you reclaim your schools.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Critical Race Theory: The Media\u2019s Darling<\/h3>\n<p>Since conservatives, parents and Republican lawmakers across the country have begun to take action against this burgeoning ideology, far-left activists and establishment media outlets have begun claiming that conservatives don\u2019t actually know or understand what CRT is \u2014 and that anyone who opposes the CRT agenda opposes teaching children about slavery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe media is perpetuating myths about critical race theory in the same way that they perpetuated the myths that \u2018Antifa is just an idea,\u2019 by denying the record of real-world harm that critical race theory has wrought in American classrooms,\u201d Rufo told the DCNF. \u201cMy reporting on <a href=\"https:\/\/christopherrufo.com\/crt-briefing-book\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/christopherrufo.com\/crt-briefing-book\/&#038;source=gmail&#038;ust=1623967632837000&#038;usg=AFQjCNHPvU2FesbVJjMP8nj5CUdr4k6-Yw\">critical race theory in education<\/a> has delivered 250 million direct media impressions, but outlets like NBC News refuse to cover the substance of this work because they want to defend critical race theory at all costs, and these concrete stories controvert their pre-manufactured narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"10.591428571429\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">And with all of their mortal panic that white &#038; nonwhite kids might discover that this country indeed has a violent history which explains a lot of our national pathologies \u2014 and yes, some heroic parts too \u2014 the critical race theory hysterics still CAN\u2019T EVEN DEFINE WHAT IT IS.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Joy-Ann (Pro-Democracy) Reid ???? But they don\u2019t know what it is. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sArEQ3SOfK\">https:\/\/t.co\/sArEQ3SOfK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Slate (@Slate) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Slate\/status\/1403783229589659662?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 12, 2021<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cPersonally, I think that Republicans specifically chose to attack critical race theory because they felt that they could define it more easily than other terms,\u201d Kendi <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2021\/06\/critical-race-theory-ibram-kendi-racism-racists.html?via=rss_socialflow_twitter\">told Slate<\/a>. \u201cSince they couldn\u2019t come out and say, \u2018Oh, those people who are challenging systemic racism are a problem.\u2019 They couldn\u2019t say, \u2018Those anti-racists are a problem.\u2019 So they\u2019re defining critical race theory at the same time they are attacking it, and critical race theorists are like, \u2018That\u2019s not how we define it.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An NBC News story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/critical-race-theory-invades-school-boards-help-conservative-groups-n1270794\">published June 15<\/a> accused activists and Republicans of seizing on anti-CRT sentiment, \u201crushing in to support the anti-critical race theory parent activists, hoping that these local battles will mobilize conservative voters in next year\u2019s midterms and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NBC story describes CRT as simply \u201cthe academic study of racism\u2019s pervasive impact\u201d without offering any discrete or specific examples of what its principles look like in practice. The article then accused critics of attempting to \u201cdisrupt lessons on race and gender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReinforced by conservative think tanks, law firms and activist parents, these groups have found allies in families frustrated over Covid-19 restrictions in schools and have weaponized the right\u2019s opposition to critical race theory, turning it into a political rallying point,\u201d wrote NBC reporters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/author\/tyler-kingkade-ncpn1116631\">Tyler Kingkade<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/author\/brandy-zadrozny-ncpn858391\">Brandy Zadrozny<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/author\/ben-collins-ncpn858396\">Ben Collins<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe groups swarm school board meetings, inundate districts with time-consuming public records requests and file lawsuits and federal complaints alleging discrimination against white students,\u201d the NBC story said. \u201cThey have become media darlings in conservative circles and made the debate over critical race theory a national issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>NBC also shared the common defense of school districts \u2014 the districts say they are not teaching CRT and that backlash is unjustified. The news outlet shared perspective from the adults who ran the \u201cAnti-Racist Parents of Loudoun County\u201d Facebook group that targeted parents in Loudoun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe national attention that has been shined on this is just ridiculous,\u201d Jamie Neidig-Wheaton, the Facebook group\u2019s white administrator, told NBC News. \u201cI get that white people don\u2019t want their kids going to school and being told their parents are racist, but it\u2019s not happening \u2014 it\u2019s made up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParents who faced threats have scrubbed their social media profiles and taken down yard signs that read \u2018Black Lives Matter,&#8217;\u201d the NBC reporters wrote. \u201cSome said they are planning to sell their houses and move.
