This is a day of profound, in my view, profound weight and profound power,\u201d Biden said prior to signing the bill into law. \u201cThe day in which you remember the moral stain, the terrible toll that slavery took on the country and continues to take. What I\u2019ve long called \u2018America\u2019s original sin.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/17\/san-jose-sharks-juneteenth-tweet\/\">Juneteenth<\/a> is already <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/06\/12\/nfl-will-recognize-juneteenth-holiday-slavery-george-floyd\/\">celebrated<\/a> across America and honors the official end of slavery in Confederate states on June 19, 1865 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/andrewsolender\/2021\/06\/17\/biden-signs-bill-making-juneteenth-a-federal-holiday--first-new-one-since-1983\/?sh=1bf8034e1737\">the day<\/a> that the Emancipation Proclamation reached a remote area of Texas. While former President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, many slaves only learned that they were free after the Civil War ended.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just months into his time in office, Biden said he knew signing the Juneteenth bill into law will be \u201cone of the greatest honors\u201d he will have as president. This is the first federal holiday to be created in nearly four decades. The last federal holiday to be established \u2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Day \u2013 occurred under former President Ronald Reagan in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act passed 415 to 14 <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/16\/sheila-jackson-lee-juneteenth-house-of-representatives\/\">in the House<\/a> on Wednesday. The 14 \u201cno\u201d votes all came from Republicans. The Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/16\/senate-passes-bill-juneteenth-federal-holiday\/\">passed<\/a> the legislation unanimously Tuesday. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/02\/jeff-merkley-william-lacy-clay-amend-13-amendment-ban-slavery-involuntary-servitude\/\">(RELATED: Democrats Introduce Bill Expanding 13th Amendment)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vice President Kamala Harris took a look back at history as she delivered remarks prior to the signing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are gathered here in a house built by enslaved people,\u201d Vice President Kamala Harris said at the White House. \u201c<span id=\"subtitle84\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"84\" data-start=\"1375635\" data-end=\"1378875\">We are footsteps away from where President<\/span>\u00a0A<span id=\"subtitle85\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"85\" data-start=\"1378935\" data-end=\"1383735\">braham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.<\/span> <span id=\"subtitle86\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"86\" data-start=\"1385055\" data-end=\"1388925\">And we are here to witness President<\/span> <span id=\"subtitle87\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"87\" data-start=\"1389015\" data-end=\"1392915\">Joe Biden establish Juneteenth as a<\/span> <span id=\"subtitle88\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"88\" data-start=\"1392915\" data-end=\"1395945\">national holiday. We have come far and<\/span> <span id=\"subtitle89\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"89\" data-start=\"1395946\" data-end=\"1398375\">we have far to go, but today<\/span> <span id=\"subtitle90\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"90\" data-start=\"1398885\" data-end=\"1401435\">is a day of celebration. It is<\/span> <span id=\"subtitle91\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"91\" data-start=\"1401435\" data-end=\"1403025\">not only a day of pride, i<\/span><span id=\"subtitle92\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"92\" data-start=\"1403955\" data-end=\"1405035\">t is also a day f<\/span><span id=\"subtitle93\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"93\" data-start=\"1405725\" data-end=\"1409535\">or us to reaffirm, and rededicate ourselves<\/span> <span id=\"subtitle94\" class=\"subtitle processed\" data-id=\"94\" data-start=\"1409535\" data-end=\"1410345\">to action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Biden noted that Juneteenth \u201crepresents not only the commemoration of the end of slavery in America \u2026 but the ongoing work to have to bring true equity and racism justice to American society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president touched on voting rights during his remarks as well, declaring them as \u201cunder attack\u201d and saying it \u201coffends the very democracy.\u201d He said that despite progress, the \u201cpromise of America for all people\u201d cannot be fulfilled with voting rights being attacked due to \u201crestrictive laws, threats of intimidation, voting purges and more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn short, this day doesn\u2019t just celebrate the past.
