Myers described the challenges and joys of parenting without gender markers in a blog, RaisingZoomer.com, and on Instagram \u2014 and received international attention when\u00a0she was interviewed for New York magazine on the subject. She went on to write a book, equal parts memoir and sociological treatise, \u2018Raising Them,\u2019 that was released in September.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sometime before \u201cRaising Them\u201d was published, during one of the family\u2019s regular \u201cpronoun checks,\u201d Zoomer informed his mother that he would like to use masculine pronouns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family does regular pronoun checks with one another. As we\u2019re putting shoes on to head out to run errands, Zoomer asks, \u2018Hey mom. What pronouns do you want me to use for you today?\u2019\u201d Myers, who identifies as \u201cgenderqueer,\u201d wrote on Instagram, announcing Zoomer\u2019s chosen gender. \u201cSome days I say, \u2018I\u2019m very they\/them this morning.\u2019 Other days I say, \u2018she\/her feels good right now, thanks for asking,&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a pronoun check back in March 2020, around Z\u2019s 4th birthday, that was quite special. I asked, \u2018What pronouns are you into for yourself these days, Zoomer?\u2019 And Zoomer responded, \u2018I love he\/him!&#8217;\u201d Myers explained, adding that Zoomer still prefers gender-neutral terms over gendered language. \u201cZoomer has used the term \u2018boy\u2019 to describe himself a few times, but still prefers the terms \u2018kid\u2019 and \u2018person,\u2019 and just being called Zoomer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the four-year-old announced his pronoun selection, Myers informed close friends and family before making the gender news public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince then, we let family, friends, &#038; Zoomer\u2019s teachers know that Z uses he\/him pronouns &#038; everyone got on board &#038; made the pronoun switch,\u201d Myers said. \u201cWe caught ourselves using they\/them &#038; quickly corrected to he\/him. Z told me once, \u2018It\u2019s okay. I like they\/them, too.\u2019 I smiled at Zoomer\u2019s grace, \u2018But if you LOVE he\/him then it\u2019s really important to me to use the pronouns you love.\u2019 Zoomer smiled back, \u2018Yeah, I love he\/him.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some things, at least, have not changed for Myers and her partner. In the 2018 New York magazine interview, the pair pledged that \u201cWe don\u2019t disclose Zoomer\u2019s genitals to people who don\u2019t need to know,\u201d and they continue to refuse to say whether Zoomer\u2019s chosen pronouns align with Zoomer\u2019s physical anatomy. They are also adamant that Zoomer could change his preferred pronoun at any moment, which is why they hesitated to reveal that Zoomer had chosen a gender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[S]haring Z\u2019s pronouns doesn\u2019t give any information about his reproductive anatomy,\u201d she added in the recent post to Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy partner, Brent, and I do something called \u2018gender creative parenting,\u2019 Myers said back in 2018. \u201cFor us, this means we didn\u2019t assign a binary girl-or-boy gender to our child, Zoomer, at birth; we don\u2019t disclose Zoomer\u2019s genitals to people who don\u2019t need to know; we used the gender-neutral pronouns they\/them\/their for Zoomer until they could tell us what pronouns and labels fit best; Zoomer learns about and explores gender without stereotypical expectations or restrictions. Brent and I are just two among thousands of people doing gender creative parenting all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew Zoomer would find pronouns that fit,\u201d Myers wrote on Instagram. \u201cZ knows he can use he\/him pronouns for the rest of his life, alternate pronouns like I do, forego pronouns, or invent new ones.
