The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markey.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/juneteenth.pdf\"><span class=\"s1\">act<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is called the \u201cJuneteenth National Independence Day Act\u201d and would designate the day as a \u201clegal public holiday.\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Some Republicans took issue with the proposed name of the holiday, saying that calling it \u201cJuneteenth National Independence Day\u201d would divide people along racial lines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/558867-14-republicans-vote-against-making-juneteenth-a-federal-holiday\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by The Hill, the 14 Republicans who voted against the measure were Reps. Andy Biggs (AZ),\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Mo Brooks<\/span>\u00a0(AL), Andrew Clyde (GA), Scott DesJarlais (TN),\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Paul Gosar<\/span>\u00a0(AZ), Ronny Jackson (TX),\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Doug LaMalfa<\/span>\u00a0(CA),\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Thomas Massie<\/span>\u00a0(KY),\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Tom McClintock<\/span>\u00a0(CA),\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Ralph Norman<\/span>\u00a0(SC),\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Mike Rogers<\/span>\u00a0(AL), Matt Rosendale (MT),\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Chip Roy<\/span>\u00a0(TX), and Tom Tiffany (WI).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Several of the lawmakers were concerned with the name of the holiday, with Massie suggesting it could be called \u201cEmancipation Day\u201d rather than \u201cNational Independence Day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI fully support creating a day to celebrate the abolition of slavery,\u201d Massie <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/558867-14-republicans-vote-against-making-juneteenth-a-federal-holiday\"><span class=\"s1\">said<\/span><\/a> during the debate on the House floor. \u201cHowever, naming this day National Independence Day will create confusion and push Americans to pick one of those two days as their Independence Day based on their racial identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/gosar.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=4426\"><span class=\"s1\">statement<\/span><\/a> released after he voted against the bill, Gosar said, \u201cOur country is divided, and the cultural and political Marxists are continuing their relentless efforts to divide this country further.\u00a0Juneteenth is more debunked Critical Race Theory in action.\u00a0I reject racism.\u00a0I reject the racial division people are promoting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He added, \u201cI voted no because this proposed holiday does not bring us together, it tears us apart.\u00a0I cannot support efforts that furthers racial divisions in this country.\u00a0We have one Independence Day, and it applies equally to all people of all races.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Before the vote, Rosendale reportedly said, \u201cLet\u2019s call an ace an ace. This is an effort by the left to create a day out of whole cloth to celebrate identity politics as part of its larger efforts to make \u2018critical race theory\u2019 the reigning ideology of our country. Since I believe in treating everyone equally, regardless of race, and that we should be focused on what unites us rather than our differences, I will vote \u2018no.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Prior to the vote, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said it was \u201can exciting, historic day,\u201d per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/congress\/house-passes-bill-make-juneteenth-federal-holiday-n1271083\">NBC News<\/a>.\u00a0The bill was still passed in the House of Representatives in a 415-14 vote and it now heads to President Joe Biden\u2019s desk.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The federal holiday would recognize June 19, 1865, observing what is traditionally celebrated as African American Emancipation Day. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/juneteenth.com\/history\/\"><span class=\"s1\">juneteenth.com<\/span><\/a>, Juneteenth is \u201cthe oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.\u201d It was the day that Major Gen. Gordon Granger led Union troops to Galveston, Texas, and told the people there that the Civil War was over and all slaves were free. The news came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on the first day of January 1863.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There have been many efforts to explain why there was such a delay in the news being received in Texas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juneteenth.com\/history\/\">Juneteenth.com<\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0noted:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p class=\"p4\"><i>Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. All of which, or none of these versions could be true.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p4\">General Granger reportedly read aloud General Order Number 3 to tell them the news, beginning with, \u201cThe people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/06\/15\/senate-passed-bill-tuesday-make-juneteenth-federal-holiday\/7709000002\/\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by USA Today, Sens. Ed Markey (D-MA), Tina Smith (D-MN), Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, (D-TX) reintroduced the bill earlier this year after Markey had introduced it last summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a statement on Tuesday, Markey noted that the United States has \u201cfailed to acknowledge, address, and come to grips with our nation\u2019s original sin of slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cToday\u2019s Senate passage of our legislation to commemorate Juneteenth as a federal holiday will address this long-ignored gap in our history, recognize the wrong that was done, acknowledge the pain and suffering of generations of slaves and their descendants, and finally celebrate their freedom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
