Economists expected just 360,000 new claims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The rise in claims comes days after a Labor Department report showed that U.S. job openings reached a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/biden-administration\/job-openings-soar-to-record-high-as-businesses-struggle-to-find-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>record high<\/span><\/a><span> 9.3 million in April. Employers hired just 6.1 million people during the same period, meaning one in three postings went unfilled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Jobless claims particularly grew in California and Pennsylvania, two states that have not moved to end the Biden administration&#8217;s enhanced benefits ahead of the scheduled September expiration date. Job Creators Network president and CEO Alfredo Ortiz blamed the unexpected rise on a &#8220;left-wing agenda that is paying people to sit on the couch instead of rejoining the workforce.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;President Biden&#8217;s overly generous unemployment benefits continue to slow our recovery, even while the number of job openings is at an all-time record,&#8221; Ortiz said in a statement. &#8220;The entire Biden administration needs to do a course correction and it needs to do it now.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The White House did not return a request for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Four Republican-led states\u2014Alaska, Iowa, Mississippi, and Missouri\u2014ended their participation in the boosted federal benefit programs Saturday. Seven additional states are set to withdraw in the coming days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Biden administration in early June walked back its past criticism of red states for rejecting the payments, with Press Secretary Jen Psaki stating that governors &#8220;have every right&#8221; to do so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Psaki also refused to reject claims that the generous benefits are restraining employment.
