But following a year in marketing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/victorias-secret-cancels-2019-fashion-show-as-brand-faces-intense-scrutiny\"> <span>purgatory<\/span><\/a><span>, the famed A<\/span><span>ngels are officially no more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After more than two decades, the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/16\/business\/victorias-secret-collective-megan-rapinoe.html\"> <span>New York Times<\/span><\/a><span> reports the company is doing away with its heavenly super-model parade. In its place will be a new promotional campaign called the \u201cVS Collective\u201d that will feature \u201cwomen famous for their achievements and not their proportions,\u201d like the soccer star and gender equality advocate Megan Rapinoe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Angel\u2019s demise has been some time coming. In 2019, CEO Leslie Wexner<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2019\/05\/10\/victorias-secret-rethinking-annual-fashion-show-leaving-network-tv\/\"> <span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> the end of the Angels fashion show broadcast, saying, \u201cFashion is a business of change. We must evolve and change to grow. With that in mind, we have decided to rethink the traditional Victoria\u2019s Secret Fashion Show.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Along with Rapinoe, the Times says the company has hired a number of women it hopes will help it redefine what it means to be sexy, including, \u201cEileen Gu, a 17-year-old Chinese American freestyle skier and soon-to-be Olympian; the 29-year-old biracial model and inclusivity advocate Paloma Essler, who was the rare size 14 woman on the cover of Vogue; and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, a 38-year-old Indian actor and tech investor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rapinoe told the newspaper that the company\u2019s previous approach to selling lingerie was, \u201cpatriarchal, sexist, viewing not just what it meant to be sexy but what the clothes were trying to accomplish through a male lens and through what men desired. And it was very much marketed toward younger women.\u201d She also called the message the Angels sent \u201creally harmful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs a gay woman,\u201d Rapinoe said, \u201cI think a lot about what we think is sexy, and we are afforded the ability to do that, because I don\u2019t have to wear the traditional sexy thing to be sexy and I don\u2019t think the traditional thing is sexy when it comes to my partner or people I\u2019ve dated.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite the disruption of increased online shopping and a rash of bad press that included models<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/victorias-secret-cancels-2019-fashion-show-as-brand-faces-intense-scrutiny\"> <span>alleging<\/span><\/a><span> a culture of bullying and harassment, as well as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/you-wont-believe-what-victorias-secret-trouble-now-amanda-prestigiacomo\"> <span>charges<\/span><\/a><span> that the brand is transphobic and not inclusive toward all body types, Victoria\u2019s Secret sales have remained relatively stable compared to other fashion retailers. According to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/victorias-secret-lingerie-comeback-years-declining-sales-wall-street-2021-5\">\u00a0<span>Business Insider<\/span><\/a><span>, the company has recently begun to recoup some of the 11% market share it lost over the last six years. \u201cSame-store sales were up 9% in the first quarter of the year versus 2019 and operating income, a measure of profitability, increased by $213 million or 665%,\u201d the outlet reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But evidently the positive outlook isn\u2019t enough to give the Angels a second lease on life. New CEO Martin Waters implied he\u2019d been waiting to step up to his new role to give that tradition the axe, saying \u201cI\u2019ve known that we needed to change this brand for a long time, we just haven\u2019t had the control of the company to be able to do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Asked specifically about the Angels branding, Waters, told the Times, \u201cRight now, I don\u2019t see it as being culturally relevant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
