Ron DeSantis pardoned any COVID-19 financial penalties at a meeting on Wednesday, including a gym owner who at one point dealt with potential jail time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s focus on the real criminals, and let\u2019s make sure that is where our effort is,\u201d DeSantis said. The governor said another round of pardons would be issued for fines businesses not previously included in earlier state clemency board meetings.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis used the meeting to highlight his opposition to local mandates. \u201cThis action is necessary so we can recover, have a good transition to our normal operations, and also, just a recognition that a lot of this stuff was way, way overboard,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"JUST IN: Ron DeSantis Pardons Gym Owner Arrested For Violating COVID-19 Mask Mandates\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ETkZynKozNw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s office didn\u2019t say how many fines on people and businesses were pardoned, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/politics-government\/state-politics\/article252151598.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miami Herald<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis called these convictions a \u201ctotal overreach,\u201d including one against Mike Carnevale, a Broward County gym owner, who was arrested three times in August 2020 for disobeying the county\u2019s rules by not requiring customers to wear masks at the gym.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really amazing that Gov. Ron DeSantis has granted us clemency for this,\u201d Mike Carnevale said Wednesday. \u201cIt\u2019s just affirmation that, you know, we were on to something.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/09\/ron-desantis-andrew-cuomo-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: DeSantis: Media Elevates \u2018Wrong\u2019 Liberal Heroes To Sainthood)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Two other elected Republicans on the board supported the move, Attorney General Ashley Moody and Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, according to the Herald. However, Nikki Fried, an agriculture commissioner running against DeSantis in 2022, opposed the decision.<\/p>\n<p>The pardon came after DeSantis announced in May during a Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/13\/ron-desantis-covid-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">interview<\/a> he planned to pardon Mike Carnevale and any Floridians who may have infractions for masks and social distancing rules. \u201cFloridians should not be penalized for rejecting the overreach of local authorities through unnecessary mask mandates,\u201d DeSantis said.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis signed an executive order in May that removed all <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/03\/ron-desantis-bill-scrapping-florida-covid-restrictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 restrictions<\/a> throughout the state, another in April outlawing COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/02\/ron-desantis-florida-executive-order-coronavirus-vaccine-passports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vaccine passports<\/a> in his state, and one in March\u00a0that stopped the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/orders\/2020\/EO_20-244.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">collection<\/a> of fines on people or businesses that violated COVID-19 rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is worth noting that local actions and protocols have helped to keep Floridians safe and healthy, and Ron DeSantis has benefited from that,\u201d St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman said in a statement back in March, according to the Miami Herald.<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
