Greg Abbott signed a law Tuesday banning the government from closing places of worship in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Texas\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/TX\/text\/HB1239\/id\/2252775\">HB1239<\/a> prohibits \u201cany elected or appointed officer, employee, or agent of the state\u201d from closing a \u201cbuilding or grounds where religious activities are conducted.\u201d The newly signed law follows an executive order Abbott issued last year that shut down Texas, including houses of worship.<\/p>\n<p>Abbott <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/04\/01\/texas-religious-services-essential-pastors-arrested\/\">later reversed his order<\/a> and allowed houses of worship to open in April 2020, deeming them essential. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/04\/01\/texas-religious-services-essential-pastors-arrested\/\">(RELATED: Texas Governor Deems Religious Services Essential As Police Arrest Southern Pastors For Holding Sunday Services)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just signed a law that prohibits any government agency or public official from issuing an order that closes places of worship,\u201d Abbott tweeted Tuesday. \u201cThe First Amendment right to freedom of religion shall never be infringed.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"10.428\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I just signed a law that prohibits any government agency or public official from issuing an order that closes places of worship.<\/p>\n<p>The First Amendment right to freedom of religion shall never be infringed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greg Abbott (@GregAbbott_TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GregAbbott_TX\/status\/1404894152895217670?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 15, 2021<\/a> <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-fullscreen-image readability=\"32.035510462904\">\n<p>Republican Texas state Rep. Scott Sanford filed the bill and said \u201cchurches provide essential spiritual, mental and physical support in a time of crisis,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/abbott-bans-orders-closing-houses-of-worship\">according to Fox News<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/16\/orthodox-jews-cuomo-new-york-supreme-court-coronavirus-restrictions\/\">RELATED: \u2018Targeting Orthodox Practices\u2019: Orthodox Jews Ask Supreme Court To Block Cuomo\u2019s Coronavirus Restrictions)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cClosing churches not only eliminated these critical ministries and services, but it violated their religious freedom, guaranteed by our laws and Constitution,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The night before Thanksgiving, the Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/11\/26\/supreme-court-andrew-cuomo-religion-jewish-covid\/\">sided with religious organizations<\/a> challenging Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s coronavirus restrictions, calling the New York Democrat\u2019s measures \u201cdiscriminatory\u201d in its injunction for emergency relief. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/03\/supreme-court-sides-against-newsom-on-california-church-restrictions\/\">(RELATED: Supreme Court Sides Against Newsom On California Church Restrictions)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cuomo\u2019s restrictions limited the number of people who could attend religious services to 10 in areas where the threat of coronavirus was highest, regardless of a church or synagogue\u2019s capacity. In areas with slightly less risk, attendance was limited to 25 people.<\/p>\n<p>The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/20\/20A87\/160205\/20201109225714204_Diocese%20Application%20TO%20FILE.pdf\">also filed an emergency application<\/a> against Cuomo in November, writing that Cuomo\u2019s order \u201cexpressly singles out \u2018houses of worship\u2019 by that name for adverse treatment relative to secular businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/12\/03\/supreme-court-sides-against-newsom-on-california-church-restrictions\/\">also tossed out an order<\/a> in December from a Central District of California court that had upheld Democratic California Gov.
