According to <a href=\"https:\/\/juneteenth.com\/history\/\"><span class=\"s1\">juneteenth.com<\/span><\/a>, Juneteenth is \u201cthe oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States.\u201d It was the day that Major General Gordon Granger led Union troops to Galveston, Texas, and told the people there that the Civil War was over and all slaves were free. The news came two and a half years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on the first day of January 1863.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There have been many efforts to explain why there was such a delay in the news being received in Texas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/juneteenth.com\/history\/\">Juneteenth.com<\/a><\/span> noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Often told is the story of a messenger who was murdered on his way to Texas with the news of freedom. Another is that the news was deliberately withheld by the enslavers to maintain the labor force on the plantations. And still another is that federal troops actually waited for the slave owners to reap the benefits of one last cotton harvest before going to Texas to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. All of which, or none of these versions could be true.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">General Granger reportedly read aloud General Order Number 3 to tell them the news, beginning with, \u201cThe people of Texas are informed that in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired laborer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2021\/06\/15\/senate-passed-bill-tuesday-make-juneteenth-federal-holiday\/7709000002\/\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by USA Today, Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), Senator Tina Smith (D-MN), Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, (D-TX) reintroduced the bill earlier this year after Markey had introduced it last summer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a statement, Markey noted that the United States has \u201cfailed to acknowledge, address, and come to grips with our nation\u2019s original sin of slavery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cToday\u2019s Senate passage of our legislation to commemorate Juneteenth as a federal holiday will address this long-ignored gap in our history, recognize the wrong that was done, acknowledge the pain and suffering of generations of slaves and their descendants, and finally celebrate their freedom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/theharrispoll.com\/should-juneteenth-be-an-official-holiday-two-thirds-of-americans-surveyed-by-harris-poll-think-so\/\"><span class=\"s1\">poll<\/span><\/a> released last year showed Americans\u2019 general understanding and knowledge of the day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/business\/2020\/06\/19\/juneteenth-official-holiday-americans-harris-poll\/3221973001\/\"><span class=\"s1\">USA Today,<\/span><\/a> \u201c22% of\u00a0Americans said they were \u2018very\u2019 aware of the date, while 30% said they were \u2018somewhat\u2019 aware, according to the poll of a nationally representative survey of 1,963 U.S. adults was taken June 13-15[, 2020].\u201d The data revealed that 33% were \u201cnot at all aware\u201d and 15% were \u201cnot very aware\u201d of the date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The poll also showed that 66% of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/business\/2020\/06\/19\/juneteenth-official-holiday-americans-harris-poll\/3221973001\/\">said<\/a> that \u201cthey supported companies making Juneteenth a holiday,\u201d whereas 34% were opposed. The outlet also noted that \u201cBlack people and African Americans were more likely than others to support Juneteenth becoming a holiday with 84% in approval.
