Putin looked away,\u201d Sciutto said.\u00a0\u201cAgain, you don\u2019t want to read too much or too little, but again, these are about public posturing, it\u2019s about how you project strength, and that was a notable moment to me, as you watch them shake hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.1666666666667\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">CNN\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jimsciutto?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@jimsciutto<\/a> gushes over Biden shaking hands w\/ Putin: &#8220;The handshake, Biden looked in the eye of Putin with a smile and Putin looked away \u2026 These [moments] are about public posturing and about how you project strength.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hzBrLEuF0Y\">pic.twitter.com\/hzBrLEuF0Y<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tom Elliott (@tomselliott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomselliott\/status\/1405145440455204867?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 16, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer added that it was a \u201csignificant handshake\u201d between the two world leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Biden and Putin spent at least two hours together during an initial, smaller meeting Wednesday morning that included their\u00a0chief diplomats, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Afterwards they held a larger meeting, which was set to include Biden\u2019s national security advisor, the U.S. ambassador to Russia, and several others.<\/p>\n<p>In a video clip showing the two presidents heading inside to their meeting in\u00a0the Swiss city\u2019s Villa la Grange, a member of the press is heard shouting, \u201cHow will you pressure Putin today?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s always better to meet face to face, try to determine where we have mutual interest, cooperate,\u201d Biden said in opening remarks in front of the press before the media was pushed out of the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you\u2019ve been on a long journey and have a lot of work,\u201d Putin said. \u201cStill the U.S. and Russia and U.S. relations have a lot of issues accumulated that require the highest-level meeting and I hope that our meeting will be productive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden and Putin will host separate press conferences, a change from the 2018\u00a0Helsinki summit, where former President Trump joined the Russian head of state for a joint press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Days ahead of the summit, Ukrainian\u00a0President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that\u00a0NATO leaders had \u201cconfirmed\u201d that Ukraine would become a new member of NATO.<\/p>\n<p>However, on Monday, Biden denied Zelensky\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt depends on whether they meet the criteria. The fact is, they still have to clean up corruption. The fact is, they have to meet other criteria to get into the action plan. And so it\u2019s, you know, school\u2019s out on that question.
