Doughty of the U.S. District Court in Monroe said the administration doesn\u2019t have the legal right to stop leasing federal territory for oil-and-gas production without approval from Congress,\u201d The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/federal-judge-stops-biden-administration-from-blocking-new-oil-and-gas-leases-11623794412\">reported<\/a>, adding that the judge noted that \u201cstates suing the federal government\u2014largely southern and coastal states\u2014will be harmed immediately as the pause prevents them from collecting lease bids and bonuses from oil-and-gas prospectors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen states sued the Biden administration over its extreme proposal, including Louisiana, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>The Financial Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/166b37b4-c661-4bef-bba3-135ac4eb1b6a\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p><em>The ruling was a significant setback for Joe Biden, who ordered the suspension of new leases for fossil fuel development on public lands and waters in January while a review of the permitting process was carried out.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The suspension \u2014 which did not affect existing drilling permits \u2014 fulfilled an election pledge and marked the president\u2019s most significant move against the energy sector after he campaigned on a \u201ctransition away from oil\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe omission of any rational explanation in cancelling the lease sales, and in enacting the Pause, results in this Court ruling that Plaintiff States also have a substantial likelihood of success on the merits of this claim,\u201d Doughty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wilx.com\/2021\/06\/15\/federal-judge-blocks-bidens-pause-new-oil-gas-leases\/?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=snd&#038;utm_content=wilx\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cMillions and possibly billions of dollars are at stake. Plaintiff states have a reliance interest in the proceeds derived from offshore and on land oil and gas lease sales.<\/p>\n<p>Doughty added, \u201cLocal government funding, jobs for Plaintiff State workers, and funds for the restoration of Louisiana\u2019s Coastline are at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Officials who support American energy praised the decision as a victory for the rule of law, workers, and American citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe federal leasing pause is harmful to our nation\u2019s national security, environmental progress and economic recovery,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.api.org\/news-policy-and-issues\/news\/2021\/06\/15\/api-calls-on-administration-to-lift-federal-leasing-pause\">said<\/a> Kevin O\u2019Scannlain, vice-president of upstream policy at the American Petroleum Institute. \u201cWe are pleased to see the court ruling that natural gas and oil leasing must resume on federal lands and waters, and we urge the administration to move expeditiously to follow the court\u2019s order and lift the federal leasing pause.
