Delish.com <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delish.com\/restaurants\/g20898890\/timeline-of-paula-deens-downfall\/\">outlined<\/a> the controversy:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"30.782073813708\">\n<p><em>June 19, 2013 \u2014 While she was being deposed during a lawsuit brought against her by Lisa Jackson, the former general manager of her Savannah, Georgia restaurant Uncle Bubba\u2019s Seafood and Oyster House, Deen admits to using the n-word in the past: \u201cYes, of course.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>During the same deposition, she also says \u201cthat\u2019s just not a word that we use as time has gone on. Things have changed since the \u201960s in the south. And my children and my brother object to that word being used in any cruel or mean behavior. As well as I do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>June 19, 2013 \u2014 Jackson also claimed Deen wanted her African American employees behave a certain way during a wedding Deen was planning. \u201cI mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America \u2026 after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War \u2026 It was not only black men, it was black women \u2026 I would say they were slaves,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/radaronline.com\/exclusives\/2013\/06\/paula-deen-racist-jokes-deposition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/radaronline.com\/exclusives\/2013\/06\/paula-deen-racist-jokes-deposition\/\">Radar<\/a> <span class=\"redactor-unlink\">quoted<\/span> Deen as saying about the party during a deposition.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>A rep for Deen later told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2013\/06\/19\/paula-deen-n-word-racist-deposition-sexual-harassment-oyster-house\/\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"http:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2013\/06\/19\/paula-deen-n-word-racist-deposition-sexual-harassment-oyster-house\/\">TMZ<\/a>: \u201cMs. Deen does not condone or find the use of racial epithets acceptable. She is looking forward to her day in court.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Deen tried to rehabilitate her image and emphasize that she\u2019s \u201cnot a racist\u201d and that her past regrettable language was shaped by the time and location. But the effort failed. Deen\u2019s endorsements and corporate ties dried up. She was essentially banned from the mainstream aside from rare appearances on shows like \u201cDancing with the Stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s Fox appearance seems more significant, as Deen is being honored for culinary skills.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the lawsuit that tanked Deen was dismissed in August 2013. PEOPLE magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/celebrity\/paula-deen-lawsuit-that-caused-her-downfall-is-dismissed\/\">reported<\/a> at the time:<\/p>\n<div class=\"paragraph \" readability=\"6.5\">\n<blockquote readability=\"6\">\n<p><em>Paula Deen and a former employee have reached a settlement to dismiss the remaining claims in a lawsuit that cost the celebrity chef a chunk of her empire.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote readability=\"13.86319218241\">\n<div class=\"paragraph \" readability=\"12.5\">\n<p><em>The U.S. District Court in Savannah, Ga., on Friday formally dismissed the sexual harassment case with prejudice, meaning it can\u2019t be filed again, just days after the judge <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/people\/article\/0,,20725006,00.html\">threw out<\/a> the racial discrimination portion of the lawsuit.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph \" readability=\"8\">\n<p><em>A court document said both sides reached the settlement \u201cwithout any award of costs or fees to any party.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph \" readability=\"9\">\n<p><em>The former employee, Lisa Jackson, released a statement saying Deen was not personally responsible.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph \" readability=\"12\">\n<p><em>\u201cI assumed that all of my complaints about the workplace environment were getting to Paula Deen, but I learned during this matter that this was not the case,\u201d said Jackson. \u201cThe Paula Deen I have known for more than eight years is a woman of compassion and kindness and will never tolerate discrimination or racism of any kind toward anyone.
