Elise Stefanik on Tuesday defended the Trump administration\u2019s attempt to reportedly seize private information of Democrats during the Russia investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Stefanik defended the Department of Justice\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/11\/doj-subpoenaed-eric-swalwell-adam-schiff-russia-leaks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seizure<\/a> of phones, emails and other records of Democratic lawmakers during the Trump administration in order to tamp down on leaks surrounding the Russia probe. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen illegal leaks from our colleagues on the House Intelligence Committee,\u201d Stefanik said at a press conference Tuesday. \u201cSo I think it\u2019s important that the Department of Justice determine if there were any illegal leaks, leaks by members of Congress, or their staff members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ subpoenaed the records of Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff and Rep. Eric Swalwell along with their staff and family members, including a minor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen illegal leaks from our colleagues on the House Intelligence Committee,\u201d Stefanik said at a press conference Tuesday. \u201cSo I think it\u2019s important that the Department of Justice determine if there were any illegal leaks, leaks by members of Congress, or their staff members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michael E. Horowitz, the Department of Justice\u2019s inspector general, <a href=\"https:\/\/oig.justice.gov\/news\/doj-oig-initiates-review-department-justices-use-subpoenas-and-other-legal-authorities-obtain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that he is investigating whether Trump administration officials abused their power to seek records. Devin Nunes during the House Intelligence Committee\u2019s investigation of Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/09\/20\/trump-biden-ukraine-zelensky\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">call<\/a> with the Ukrainian president to investigate Hunter Biden.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is unethical. Frankly, I believe that\u2019s illegal,\u201d Stefanik said. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/14\/donald-trump-doj-official-resigns-spying-scandal-vince-jason-save-the-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Trump\u2019s DOJ Official Resigns Amid Uproar Over Spying Scandal)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/11\/doj-ig-review-subpoenas-schiff-swalwell-new-york-times\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Department of Justice<\/a> didn\u2019t respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChairman Schiff never issued subpoenas for phone records for Members, despite many false assertions otherwise. As a member of our committee, Rep. Stefanik should know better,\u201d Lauren French, Schiff\u2019s spokeswoman said in an email to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/house\/558500-gops-stefanik-defends-trump-doj-secret-subpoenas?rl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should all focus on getting answers and making sure the DOJ is never weaponized for political purposes ever again, not spreading falsehoods like these to defend President Trump and the destructive actions of his administration,\u201d French said to the Hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut make no mistake, there have been illegal leaks from members of Congress. That\u2019s a national security risk. That is a federal crime.
