Ron DeSantis signed a bill Tuesday requiring public schools to offer a moment of silence for students.<\/p>\n<p>HB 529, which goes into effect July 1, requires Florida schools to hold a daily moment of silence of one to two minutes, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2021\/529\/BillText\/er\/PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bill<\/a> states. The bill requires public-school principals to direct first-period teachers to institute moments of silence.<\/p>\n<p>The bill asks that teachers to encourage parents to discuss the moment of silence with their children, but adds that teachers can\u2019t give suggestions to students about what to do during the moment of silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea that you can just push God out of every institution and be successful, I\u2019m sorry, our Founding Fathers did not believe that,\u201d DeSantis said in a speech at a Jewish community center called the Shul of Bal Harbour before signing the bill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Florida Gov. Dennis Baxley defended the bill during a Senate floor debate in April by saying the bill will give school children a silent moment to reflect, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox35orlando.com\/news\/gov-desantis-signs-bill-requiring-moment-of-silence-in-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fox 35<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic state Rep. Omari Hardy voted against the bill and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OmariJHardy\/status\/1404518696446537733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accused<\/a> the sponsors of pushing <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/03\/19\/ninth-circuit-free-speech-religious-liberty-bremerton-school-district-football-coach-praying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prayer<\/a> in public schools. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/12\/ron-desantis-children-students-no-masks-fall-semester-florida\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: DeSantis: \u2018Kids Do Not Need To Be Wearing These Masks\u2019 For Fall School Semester)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Republican who sponsored the bill said that it wasn\u2019t about prayer in school. (Of course it was!) But when you question their motives, or their honesty, it\u2019s called a personal attack &#038; deemed out of order. No. The Republicans lie, and we need to call them on it every time,\u201d Hardy said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OmariJHardy\/status\/1404518696446537733\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweet<\/a> Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Students praying at school has been a controversial topic across the country. A prayer room in Texas at <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2017\/03\/17\/prayer-room-at-public-high-school-raises-legal-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Liberty High School<\/a>\u00a0in March 2017 raised legal concerns that it may violate student\u2019s First Amendment protection of religious liberty. Andrew Leonie, Deputy Attorney General, sent a letter to Superintendent Jeremy Lyons, writing that the school\u2019s policy should be neutral toward religion.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/12\/19\/school-reminded-of-constitution-reverses-private-prayer-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wyoming school<\/a> in December 2015 had to reverse a ban that told students they couldn\u2019t pray in the cafeteria after a Christian legal group threatened legal action on constitutional grounds. Glendo High School received a letter from the Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal group, which threatened to take legal action if the district continued to ban the students from praying.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nunez said that this bill shows DeSantis\u2019s continued support for religious communities in his state, while speaking at the Jewish community center in Miami-Dade County, according to Fox 35.
