Blinken and his staff reportedly recommended a suite of sanctions that could derail the construction of the pipeline, which is now already 90% complete. Biden reportedly overruled the plan, however, arguing the sanctions would jeopardize U.S. relations with Germany and were likely to only slow construction, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/biden-putin-summit\/2021\/06\/15\/19657e2c-cd44-11eb-9b7e-e06f6cfdece8_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to WaPo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans on Capitol Hill have repeatedly attacked Biden for removing obstacles to the pipeline\u2019s completion.
