Version: 4.0.47--><div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/GettyImages-1233464709-1200x800-1.jpg\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"  style=\"display:none\"><\/div>\n<p><span>The United States and the European Union are planning to create a joint technology and trade initiative in order to counter the rise of China\u2019s influence on the global stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the face of China\u2019s massive investment in fields such as artificial intelligence, the Technology and Trade Council will \u201c<\/span><span>devise new standards for emerging technology, promote democratic values online and help the U.S. and EU collaborate on cutting-edge research.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/15\/america-and-eu-will-join-forces-to-craft-new-rules-on-trade-and-tech.html\">CNBC<\/a>, the Council will have three \u201coverarching\u201d goals: \u201c<\/span><span>establish new global trade standards for emerging technology, promote democratic values online and find ways for the United States and the EU to collaborate on cutting-edge research and development.\u201d Other \u201cspecific goals\u201d of the council include coordinating \u201cstandards on new technology like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and biotechnology,\u201d making \u201csupply chains more resilient and less dependent on China,\u201d the pursuit of \u201creforms at the World Trade Organization,\u201d and coordinating the \u201cregulation of tech platforms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The American side of the Council will be co-chaired by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, <\/span><span>Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, and Ambassador Katherine Tai, the U.S. trade representative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>At the U.S.-EU summit, the President and European Union leaders will focus on aligning our approaches to trade and technology so that democracies and not anyone else \u2014 not China or other autocracies \u2014 are writing the rules for trade and technology for the 21st century,\u201d said National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan last week during a White House <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/06\/07\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-jen-psaki-and-national-security-advisor-jake-sullivan-june-7-2021\/\"><span>press briefing<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen President Biden returns to Washington next week, we believe that we will be in a materially stronger position to manage the major threats and challenges this country faces: COVID, climate, China, cyber, Russia, and shaping the rules of trade and technology for the future,\u201d Sullivan added later.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2021\/06\/15\/background-press-call-by-a-senior-administration-official-previewing-the-u-s-eu-summit\/\"><span>press call<\/span><\/a><span> on June 14, a senior administration official previewed the U.S.-EU summit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOne of the most significant outcomes of this meeting and a very important initiative that will serve as a platform for U.S.-EU cooperation in the years ahead will be the launch of a Trade and Technology Council,\u201d the official said. \u201cThe notion here is that the United States and Europe laid the foundation for the world economy after World War Two and now have to work together to write the rules of the road for the next generation, particularly in the areas of economics and emerging technologies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Trade and Technology Council will cover a number of significant areas of priority for both the United States and the European Union, from coordinating on standards for new technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing, biotechnology; to coordinating on supply chain resilience; to coordinating on import \u2014 or investment screening and export controls; to coordinating on how best to reform the WTO,\u201d the official continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe Trade and Technology Council is fundamentally about setting out an affirmative vision to the world rooted in our shared values and our shared economic interests,\u201d they added later. \u201cOf course, we also have to take account of the fact that China poses a significant challenge in both of these areas.
