Every day when I look out across my podium, I don\u2019t see people who look like me. But more to the point, I don\u2019t see people who reflect the richness and diversity of this city,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>If the reporters in the city\u2019s media pool perfectly reflected Chicago\u2019s demographics, <a href=\"https:\/\/triblive.com\/news\/world\/chicago-ends-2020-with-769-homicides-as-gun-violence-surges\/\">one<\/a> out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/quickfacts\/chicagocityillinois\">every 3,500<\/a> would be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/breaking\/ct-chicago-homicides-data-tracker-htmlstory.html\">homicide victim<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started a long overdue conversation about diversity in newsrooms, in coverage,\u201d Lightfoot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2021\/06\/12\/chicago_mayor_lori_lightfoot_i_started_a_long_overdue_conversation_about_diversity_in_newsrooms.html\">continued<\/a>. \u201cYou all are the mirrors on society. \u2026 I hope my conversation has pricked the consciousness of the people who do the hiring decisions in media rooms all across this city and, hopefully, across the country. We\u2019ve got to do better.\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2021\/06\/12\/chicago_mayor_lori_lightfoot_i_started_a_long_overdue_conversation_about_diversity_in_newsrooms.html\">concluded<\/a> last Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Berman had previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/chicago-journalist-defends-lori-lightfoots-reported-decision-not-to-interview-with-white-reporters\">given a platform<\/a> to Chicago Sun-Times reporter Lynn Sweet to defend Lightfoot\u2019s policy, saying, \u201cI am not troubled by this\u201d racial discrimination. CNN offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22tulsi+gabbard%22+%22lori+lightfoot%22+site:cnn.com&amp;client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;source=lnt&amp;tbs=qdr:m&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjz0PH_6pfxAhUJbc0KHaDQCUEQpwV6BAgCECM&amp;biw=1421&amp;bih=727\">no coverage<\/a> of former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard when she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/tulsi-gabbard-blasts-lori-lightfoots-anti-white-racism-demands-other-dems-condemn\">called upon<\/a> \u201cPresident Biden, Kamala Harris, and other leaders of our county \u2014 of all races \u2014 to join me in\u201d condemning \u201call racism, including anti-white\u201d racism.<\/p>\n<p>If Lightfoot hoped to spur media outlets into imposing racial hiring tests, she is too late. Numerous media outlets have embraced \u201cdiversity\u201d via exclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, iHeart Media <a href=\"https:\/\/cnsnews.com\/article\/business\/rob-shimshock\/media-giant-iheart-we-are-looking-only-diverse-hires-time\">announced<\/a> that a job opening in its podcast division would be open only to minority applicants. \u201cDiversity is incredibly important to our team and our company so we are looking at only diverse hires at this time,\u201d wrote executive producer Molly Socha on a listserv. The job\u2019s racial bar did not appear in the job\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/iheartmedia.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com\/External_iHM\/job\/New-York-NY-55th-St\/Podcast-Editor-Engineer_Req24349-1\">public listing<\/a>. Socha later ascribed her blatant racial discrimination to an \u201cerror in language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to clarify, ALL are welcome to apply and we will consider ALL qualified candidates,\u201d she wrote. (Emphasis in original.) \u201cThat being said, in our efforts to elevate diverse voices in the predominately white podcast space, we strongly encourage engineers\/editors of color \u2014 regardless of gender and sexual orientation \u2014 to apply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the financial media empire Bloomberg News added a new content vertical, Bloomberg Equality, which will \u201cfeature original journalism, such as data-based projects tracking&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/diversity-equality-in-american-business\/\">the race and gender breakdown of companies\u2019 employees<\/a>&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/covid-vaccine-tracker-global-distribution\/us-vaccine-demographics.html\">racial and ethnic disparities in vaccine distribution across the U.S.<\/a>,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/media\/bloomberg-expands-dei-coverage-with-dedicated-equality-vertical\/\">reported<\/a> Digiday. \u201cAbout half of Bloomberg\u2019s new hires in 2020 were racially and ethnically diverse, according to the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As far back as 2018, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCNewsbeat\/status\/953602152311803905\">openly announced<\/a> that a job opening for a \u201cTrainee Multi-Media Journalist\u201d position would be open only \u201cfor people from a black, Asian, or non-white ethnic minority background.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.3323353293413\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Newsbeat is looking for a Trainee Multi-Media Journalist. Obama\u2019s closest personal adviser, <a href=\"http:\/\/therightswriter.com\/2009\/09\/valerie-jarrett-the-next-van-jones\/\">Valerie Jarrett<\/a>, brought in Mark Lloyd as the first-ever \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/therightswriter.com\/2010\/09\/the-washington-post-discovers-valerie-jarrett\/\">Diversity Czar<\/a>\u201d at the Federal Communications Commission. At a 2005 conference, Lloyd <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/press-releases\/jw-obtains-documents-obama-fcc-diversity-czar-mark-lloyds-official-mission-duties-and\/\">said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p><em>[W]e have really, truly good white people in important positions [in the media]. And the fact of the matter is that there are a limited number of those positions. And unless we are conscious of the need to have more people of color, gays, other people in those positions we will not change the problem. We\u2019re in a position where you have to say who is going to step down so someone else can have power.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meanwhile, America\u2019s news consumers say they do not share the Left\u2019s obsessive racial emphasis in media content or provision. Racial inequality is the topic that the highest percentage of Americans say is getting too much attention,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalism.org\/2021\/04\/28\/at-100-day-mark-coverage-of-biden-has-been-slightly-more-negative-than-positive-varied-greatly-by-outlet-type\/\">reported<\/a> the Pew Research Center in April.
