Alexander Litvinenko, poisoned by polonium. Sergei Magnitsky, allegedly beaten and died in prison. Boris Nemtsov, shot moments from the Kremlin, moments from here. Mikhail Lesin\u2014 died of\u2014 blunt trauma in Washington, D.C.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>\u201cAre all of these a coincidence, Mr. President?\u201d Simmons asked.<\/p>\n<p class>Once the translation came through to Putin he burst out laughing, saying, \u201cLook, you know, I don\u2019t want to come across as being rude, but\u2014 this looks like\u2014 some kind of\u2014 indigestion, except that it\u2019s verbal indigestion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>\u201cYou mentioned many individuals who indeed suffered and perished at different points in time for various reasons at the hand of different individuals,\u201d he said. \u201cYou mentioned Lesin. Lesin used to work in my administration. I\u2014 liked him very much. He died\u2014 he perished or died in the United States. I\u2019m not sure if he perished or died. We should ask you how exactly he perished. I\u2014 regret to this day that he is not with us. In my opinion, he\u2019s a very decent person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>\u201cAs far as\u2014 the others, we found some of the criminals who committed\u2014 those crimes. Some are in prison, and we are prepared to continue to work in this mode and\u2014 along this avenue identifying everybody who violate the law and by their actions cause damage, including to the image of the Russian Federation,\u201d he continued. \u201cHowever\u2014just piling everything together is\u2014 meaningless\u2014 inappropriate, and baseless. If\u2014 one sees it as a line of attack, then very well. Let me listen to it\u2014 one more time. But I repeat it\u2014 I\u2014 I\u2019d like to repeat that I have heard it\u2014 many times. But this doesn\u2019t baffle me. We don\u2019t swear everlasting love and friendship.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class><em>We are partners. And in some areas, we are rivals or competitors. As far as harsh rhetoric, I think that\u2014 this is an expression of overall U.S. culture. Of course in Hollywood, because we mentioned Hollywood at the beginning of our conversation, there are some\u2014 deep things\u2014 in\u2014 Hollywood\u2014 macho\u2014 which can be treated as\u2014 cinematographic art but more often than not it\u2019 s macho behavior that is part of\u2014 U.S.- political culture where it\u2019s considered normal.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class><em>By the way, not here. It is not considered normal here. If this rhetoric is followed by a suggestion to meet and discuss bilateral issues and matters of international policies, I see it as desire to engage in joint work. If this desire is serious, we\u2019re prepared to support it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class><em>KEIR SIMMONS: I don\u2019t\u2014 I don\u2019t\u2014 I don\u2019t think I heard you answer the question, the direct question\u2014 Mr. President.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class><em>VLADIMIR PUTIN: I did answer. I did answer. I will add\u2014 if you let me, I have heard dozens of such accusations, especially during the period of\u2014 some grave events during our counterterrorism efforts in North Caucuses.
