Former transgender people and conservative activists told the Daily Caller News Foundation that this is a deliberate effort to normalize the surgeries and make them more accessible to children.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers have proposed at least 114 bills related to transgender issues as of June 2, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/blog\/guide-journalists-reporting-anti-trans-state-legislation\">according the LGBTQ activism organization GLAAD<\/a>. Both Arkansas and Tennessee have passed laws restricting sex change surgeries or procedures for minors: <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/06\/arkansas-trans-governor-legislature-bans-trans-surgeries-minors\/\">Arkansas<\/a> banned the surgeries and procedures for minors, despite the governor\u2019s veto, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/20\/tennessee-bans-minors-trans-hormone-treatment\/\">Tennessee<\/a> banned ethically fraught hormone treatment for children who had not yet reached puberty.<\/p>\n<p>Most media framing of these bills takes an activist approach rather than reporting the bills straightforwardly. Outlets use vague phrases like \u201cgender affirming medical care\u201d or \u201ctrans affirming medical care\u201d instead of saying sex change surgery or gender transition surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey keep rebranding the gender change process,\u201d said former transgender woman <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/07\/walt-heyer-trans-woman-arkansas-hutchinson\/\">Walt Heyer<\/a>, who now runs the website\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sexchangeregret.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sex Change Regret<\/a>. \u201cFirst it was \u2018sex change,\u2019 then it was \u2018gender reassignment.\u2019 They want to make this not look like the child abuse it really is and now want to sell you and everyone else that it\u2019s \u2018gender affirming medical care.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis liberal obsession is destroying an entire generation,\u201d Heyer added. \u201cAnd they don\u2019t care.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/20\/tennessee-bans-minors-trans-hormone-treatment\/\">(RELATED: Tennessee Becomes Second State To Ban Trans Hormone Treatments Before Puberty)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The DCNF reached out to multiple progressive activism organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), and GLAAD, for insight into why activists and media discuss sex change surgeries in this way. GLAAD and the ACLU did not offer perspective, but the HRC directed the DCNF to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/reporting-about-transgender-people-read-this\">their media guide<\/a> and highlighted that the<span> American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed gender-affirming care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Sex Changes For Minors Or \u2018Gender Affirming Medical Care\u2019<\/h3>\n<p>When Arkansas passed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkleg.state.ar.us\/Bills\/FTPDocument?path=%2FBills%2F2021R%2FPublic%2FHB1570.pdf\">Save Adolescents From Experimentation Act<\/a>\u201d (SAFE) banning sex change procedures and surgeries for minors, most media outlets described the legislation using phrases like \u201cgender affirming care\u201d and \u201clife saving care.\u201d <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/09\/florida-ron-desantis-lgbtq\/\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: DeSantis Says He Would Ban Trans Surgeries For Minors)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cArkansas passes bill to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth,\u201d NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/feature\/nbc-out\/arkansas-passes-bill-ban-gender-affirming-care-trans-youth-n1262412\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">headlined<\/a> its story, while Yahoo News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/lifestyle\/wolfe-espinosa-villegas-arkansas-aclu-195610584.html\">similarly described the bill<\/a> as one that banned \u201caccess to gender-affirming care for transgender residents who are minors,\u201d and CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/05\/politics\/asa-hutchinson-arkansas-transgender-health-care-veto\/index.html\">referred<\/a> to the surgeries as \u201cgender-affirming \u2018procedures\u2019 for trans people under age 18.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2021\/03\/29\/arkansas-passes-bill-restricting-access-medical-treatments-transgender-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>\u00a0the SAFE Act restricts \u201c<span data-qa=\"headline-opinion-text\">access to medical treatments for transgender children,\u201d calling the legislation \u201cpart of a growing effort by politicians to restrict the rights of transgender young people across America.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This media trend has continued throughout discussion of sex change procedures and surgeries for children, such as in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/family-speaks-out-against-texas-bill-to-ban-gender-affirming-medical-care-for-transgender-minors\/\">May CBS News segment<\/a> that refers to \u201cgender-affirming medical care for trans youth\u201d regarding Texas legislation. Correspondent Lesley Stahl even used the phrase in a 60 Minutes segment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-9621959\/Lesley-Stahl-defends-CBS-60-Minutes-episode-transgender-teens-rushed-it.html\">criticized<\/a> for its <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/24\/cbs-trasngender-lesley-stahl-lgbtq-60-minutes\/\">frank discussion<\/a> of how easy it is to obtain the irreversible sex change surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/13\/nyregion\/black-trans-lives-march-pride.html\">referred<\/a> to \u201cgender-affirming or transition-related medical care\u201d in a Sunday piece on a Brooklyn, New York, transgender rally.<\/p>\n<p>The language is also used by smaller outlets like The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/2021\/05\/18\/senate-passes-ban-on-gender-affirming-medical-care-for-transgender-youth\/\">Dallas Morning News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2021\/05\/23\/texas-transgender-legislation-sports-health-care\/\">The Texas Tribune<\/a>, and The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2021\/06\/14\/commentary-health\/\">Salt Lake Tribune<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/24\/cbs-trasngender-lesley-stahl-lgbtq-60-minutes\/\">(RELATED: \u2018I Still Felt Incomplete\u2019: Detransitioned Men, Women Describe How Frighteningly Easy It Was To Get Trans Surgeries, Hormones)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Activist Charlotte Clymer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cmclymer\/status\/1403126286378311680\">used the phrase<\/a> when praising Iran as a supporter of trans rights last week, tweeting, \u201cIran literally pays for trans-affirming medical care with state funds,\u201d though Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-29832690\">has a documented record<\/a> of forcing LGBTQ persons into sex change surgery against their will and often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2019\/06\/14\/countries-where-being-gay-is-legally-punishable-by-death\/39574685\/\">punishes<\/a> homosexuality with death.\u00a0 Like Clymer, former President Barack Obama\u2019s state department also <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2015\/06\/26\/state-department-officially-calls-irans-forced-sex-change-surgeries-confirmation\/\">referred<\/a> to Iran\u2019s sex change surgeries as \u201cgender-confirmation surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As recently as Monday, Popular Information reporter Judd Legum <a href=\"https:\/\/popular.info\/p\/corporate-pride-political-donations\">described transgender bills<\/a> as \u201clegislation that would criminalize providing gender-affirming medical care to adults and children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Legum first incorrectly told the DCNF Monday that the bills he referenced, such as Texas\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/capitol.texas.gov\/tlodocs\/87R\/billtext\/pdf\/SB01646I.pdf#navpanes=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate Bill 1646,<\/a> had nothing to do with sex change surgeries. He then defended his characterization of the bills as \u201c100% accurate,\u201d saying, \u201cI don\u2019t have to follow the Daily Caller style guide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The issue has gained national prominence over the past couple years since events like <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2019\/10\/24\/media-james-younger-trans-case\/\">the case of James Younger<\/a>, a 7-year-old whose mother planned to transition him to a girl despite his father\u2019s objections. Author and researcher Abigail Shrier ignited global discussion through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Irreversible-Damage-Transgender-Seducing-Daughters\/dp\/1684510317\">her 2020 book<\/a> on concerning spikes in transgenderism among teenage girls who formerly displayed feminine traits and tendencies.<\/p>\n<p>American Principles Project President Terry Schilling told the DCNF that this use of language is \u201can organized and deliberate effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWoke activists need to use euphemisms to describe the horrible policies they support because they are so incredibly unpopular with the American people,\u201d Schilling said. \u201cThey say things like \u2018reproductive care\u2019 as a substitute for late-term abortion, \u2018equity\u2019 instead of state-sanctioned racism, or \u2018gender-affirming medical care\u2019 instead of sex changes for kids, hoping no one will call them on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The media, Schilling warned, is \u201call too willing to go along with the ruse because the newsrooms are full of woke activists.\u201d\u00a0<span id=\"m_-6648834582791548899gmail-docs-internal-guid-c00a33b1-7fff-d88c-b4da-6510fef2959c\"><\/span><\/p>\n<h3>A Transgender Style Guide?<\/h3>\n<p>The terminology many media outlets use in reporting on LGBTQ issues conforms to progressive activist style guides, such as the Gay &#038; Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD)\u2019s style guide for reporters.<\/p>\n<p>GLAAD boasts of promoting \u201caccurate, inclusive stories and messages in media outlets that increase and enhance representation of LGBTQ people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/reference\/style\">highlighting<\/a> that the Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times have specific LGBTQ style requirements. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/12\/here-are-the-states-that-want-to-ban-trans-surgeries-for-minors\/\">(RELATED: Here Are The States That Want To Ban Trans Surgeries For Minors)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGLAAD has learned a lot since its founding in 1985 about the media\u2019s role in changing hearts and minds,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/institute\">organization\u2019s website said<\/a>. \u201cGLAAD demonstrated not only media\u2019s powerful influence\u2014impacting how people treat others, how they vote, and their daily decisions\u2014but our own authoritative potential to lead the conversation, reshape the narrative, and ultimately, change the culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GLAAD\u2019s guide encourages reporters to avoid the phrase \u201csex change operation\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glaad.org\/reference\/transgender\">adds in bold<\/a> that \u201cjournalists should avoid overemphasizing the role of surgeries in the transition process.\u201d GLAAD did not respond to a request for comment explaining this statement.<\/p>\n<p>The HRC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.org\/resources\/reporting-about-transgender-people-read-this\">style guide<\/a> also offers suggestions to reporters on how to discuss this topic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransition is a process that some transgender people undergo when they decide to live as the gender with which they identify, rather than the one they were assigned at birth,\u201d the HRC style guide said. \u201cA transgender person transitioning is not \u2018becoming\u2019 a man or a woman; they are starting to live openly as their true gender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransitioning can include medical components such as hormone therapy and surgery. However, not every transition involves medical interventions,\u201d the style guide said.<\/p>\n<p>APP\u2019s President Terry Schilling suggested that conservatives should respond to this use of language and media by rejecting \u201cthe Left\u2019s framing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"m_-6648834582791548899gmail-docs-internal-guid-c00a33b1-7fff-d88c-b4da-6510fef2959c\">\u201cTell the truth about what\u2019s happening,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd do what\u2019s necessary to protect these kids \u2014 pass legislation that would ban these horrific procedures, and create private rights of action for all these kids who have been harmed by these doctors, industries, and institutions that pushed them into genital mutilation, sterilization, and even worse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"m_-6648834582791548899gmail-docs-internal-guid-c00a33b1-7fff-d88c-b4da-6510fef2959c\">\u201cThe vast majority of Americans agree that pushing sex changes on children is crazy, so politicians need to be willing to stand up for these kids and do the right thing,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Former Trans People Weigh In<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.partnersforethicalcare.com\/\">Partners for Ethical Care<\/a> co-founder Erin Brewer said that she finds these descriptions \u201cvery concerning,\u201d adding that even the World Professional Association of Transgender Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpath.org\/publications\/soc\">guidelines<\/a> warn \u201cthat the vast majority of children will have their gender dysphoria resolved if they progress naturally through puberty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brewer, who has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Always-Erin-Brewer\/dp\/B095F2RC97\/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&#038;qid=1621679886&#038;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">written a book<\/a> describing her experiences as a child who identified as transgender but did not go through any type of hormone therapy or procedures, told the DCNF that children often develop gender dysphoria as a result of underlying issues, such as sexual assault. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/02\/desantis-noem-womens-sports-ncaa\/\">(RELATED: \u2018Woke\u2019 Pressure \u2018Strengthened\u2019 DeSantis Decision To Ban Biological Males From Women\u2019s Sports, Spox Says)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese kids need mental health services to help resolve the underlying issues, not medical interventions that damage their healthy body,\u201d she said. \u201cThese interventions are the antithesis of medical care, they damage a child\u2019s healthy body and give a child the message that they are inherently flawed and the self-hatred they have for their body is justified. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no research that supports medically transing a child,\u201d she added, \u201cHowever, there is ample evidence that shows these interventions increase self-harm and suicidality.
