Regarding what concessions he wanted Putin to make, Vega asked Biden what would make a successful meeting, what Americans should expect, and what his mindset was going into the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Included in Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/06\/14\/remarks-by-president-biden-in-press-conference-3\/\">response<\/a>, Biden called Putin \u201ctough,\u201d \u201cbright,\u201d and \u201ca worthy adversary\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"30\">\n<p><em>BIDEN:\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you all that when it\u2019s over. Look, I\u2019ve been doing this a long time. The last thing anyone would do is negotiate in front of the world press as to how he\u2019s going to approach a critical meeting with another adversary and\/or someone who could be an adversary. It\u2019s the last thing I\u2019m going to do.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But I will tell you this: I\u2019m going to make clear to President Putin that there are areas where we can cooperate, if he chooses. And if he chooses not to cooperate and acts in a way that he has in the past, relative to cybersecurity and some other activities, then we will respond. We will respond in kind.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There need not be \u2014 we should decide where it\u2019s in our mutual interest, in the interest of the world, to cooperate, and see if we can do that.\u00a0 And the areas where we don\u2019t agree, make it clear what the red lines are. I have met with him. He\u2019s bright. He\u2019s tough. And I have found that he is a \u2014 as they say, when you used to play ball, \u201ca worthy adversary.\u201d But the fact is that I will be happy to talk with you when it\u2019s over, and not before, about what the discussion will entail.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.904958677686\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">President Joe Biden, characterizing Russian President Vladimir Putin as bright, tough and a &#8216;worthy adversary,&#8217; said he would offer Moscow areas of cooperation if Putin so chooses <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eh1o26UuNe\">pic.twitter.com\/eh1o26UuNe<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Reuters (@Reuters) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Reuters\/status\/1404555496317718535?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Later during the press conference, CNN\u2019s Jeff Zeleny pressed Biden on whether he thinks Putin was \u201ca killer,\u201d something Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-says-killer-vladimir-putin-will-pay-a-price-for-election-interference\">accused<\/a> Putin of earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Biden appeared to struggle in responding to the question before ultimately saying, \u201cI don\u2019t think it matters a whole lot, in terms of this next meeting we\u2019re about to have.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"39\">\n<p><em>JEFF ZELENY, CNN: Sir, good evening.\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 In a weekend interview, Vladimir Putin laughed at the suggestion that you had called him a \u201ckiller.\u201d\u00a0 Is that still your belief, sir, that he is a killer?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And I\u2019ll continue the trend, if you don\u2019t mind, of asking a second question.\u00a0 Do you believe \u2014 if he does agree to cooperate, then what kind of a challenge do you find yourself in?\u00a0 How would you ever trust him?\u00a0 And if Ronald Reagan said \u201ctrust but verify,\u201d what do you say to Vladimir Putin?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>BIDEN: (Laughs.)\u00a0 To answer the first question \u2014 (laughs) \u2014 I\u2019m laughing too. They actually \u2014 I \u2014<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>ZELENY: So he is a killer?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>BIDEN: Well, look, I mean, he has made clear that \u2014 the answer is: I believe he has, in the past, essentially acknowledged that he was \u2014 there were certain things that he would do or did do. But look, when I was asked that question on air, I answered it honestly.\u00a0 But it\u2019s not much of a \u2014 I don\u2019t think it matters a whole lot, in terms of this next meeting we\u2019re about to have.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.9107142857143\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The leader of the free world&#8217;s brain just completely broke when he was asked if Putin is a &#8220;killer&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/q1pEK4nMFp\">pic.twitter.com\/q1pEK4nMFp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Caleb Hull (@CalebJHull) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CalebJHull\/status\/1404527472910163983?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Following Zeleny\u2019s question, Anne Gearan at The Washington Post asked Biden about the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, suggesting that America\u2019s allies were \u201cpretty rattled by what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat do you say to those Allies, what have you been saying to them at these meetings about how the next president of the United States can keep any promises you make?\u201d Gearan asked.<\/p>\n<p>After responding to her question, Biden continued, saying in part:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"34\">\n<p><em>BIDEN: But I think it\u2019s appropriate to say that the Republican Party is vastly diminished in numbers; the leadership of the Republican Party is fractured; and the Trump wing of the party is the bulk of the party, but it makes up a significant minority of the American people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I think it is a shock and surprise that what\u2019s happened, in terms of the consequence of President Trump\u2019s phony populism, has \u2014 has happened. And it is disappointing that so many of my Republican colleagues in the Senate, who I know know better, have been reluctant to take on, for example, an investigation because they\u2019re worried about being primaried. But, at the end of the day, we\u2019ve been through periods like this in American history before where there has been this reluctance to take a chance on your reelection because of the nature of your party\u2019s politics at the moment.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>So, as I said, the proof will be in where it is, you know, six months from now \u2014 where \u2014 where we are. But I think you\u2019re going to see that there\u2019s \u2014 that, God willing, we\u2019re going to be making progress, and there\u2019s going to be a coalescing of a lot of Republicans, particularly younger Republicans who are coming up in the party.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"13.279411764706\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pres.
