According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpri.com\/news\/local-news\/south-county\/south-kingstown-investigating-how-political-mailers-were-sent-directly-to-students\/\"><span>local news outlets<\/span><\/a><span>, Savanstano said that rules allow the school district to share directory information, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independentri.com\/news\/article_30b7b636-a863-11eb-8de4-2304b4d24b21.html\"><span>denied<\/span><\/a><span> that it had given the data to the AFL-CIO. \u201cPlease know we do not take this lightly,\u201d she told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpri.com\/news\/local-news\/south-county\/south-kingstown-investigating-how-political-mailers-were-sent-directly-to-students\/\"><span>WPRI<\/span><\/a><span>.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Amid the controversy over potential improper union influence and conflict of interest, the school district shifted focus by hurling allegations of racism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On June 2, school board chair Emily Cummiskey posted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210602171306if_\/https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=2034981493307030&amp;id=1111216525683536\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span> on Facebook that attacked resident Nicole Solas, who had filed public records requests asking about the district\u2019s curriculum, and the national group Parents Defending Education (PDE).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Both had submitted public records requests to find out about the school\u2019s increasing racial rhetoric in the community; the district attempted to charge Solas thousands of dollars, leading her to break up her requests into many smaller ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe individual responsible for more [than] 200+ [public record] requests in recent weeks has been linked directly to a national, racist group working to spread chaos, confusion, and dismantle anti-racism in schools nationwide,\u201d Cummiskey wrote, saying that was PDE\u2019s \u201cMO.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>PDE is a new, bipartisan group run by two women of color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Cumminskey revealed on June 8 that the statement in her name was actually written by a PR firm the district hired at taxpayer expense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The vice-chair of the district\u2019s school board, Sarah Markey, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neari.org\/About\/Officers-Staff\"><span>works<\/span><\/a><span> as an assistant executive director of the state chapter of the National Education Association (NEA), the nation\u2019s largest labor union. The NEA works <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aflcio.org\/about-us\/our-unions-and-allies\/nea-partnerships\"><span>hand-in-hand<\/span><\/a><span> with the AFL-CIO, and Cumminskey and Markey were aligned as part of a faction on the school board.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In her capacity as a school board member, Markey sat in school committee meetings with NEA officials on multiple occasions. In 2020, the Rhode Island Ethics Commission concluded an investigation by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ricentral.com\/narragansett_times\/ethics-commission-clears-sk-school-committee-member\/article_e38eb05e-5d76-11ea-aace-d74de6c73361.html\"><span>determining<\/span><\/a><span> that Markey did not violate the state\u2019s ethics statute with her dual roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On June 10, the school board was set to discuss placing Savastano on leave pending the results of the mailer investigation. But it backed down after a document disseminated by unknown activists asked progressives in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/censusreporter.org\/profiles\/97000US4401020-south-kingstown-school-district-ri\/\"><span>87%-white<\/span><\/a><span> district to show up \u201cIN LARGE NUMBERS\u201d to stop it, saying \u201cWhite Supremacist Playbooks have NO PLACE IN OUR SCHOOLS\u201d \u2014 perhaps seeking to draw numbers from those who did not understand what the personnel action was actually about.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Apparently, as a result of the pressure, the school board removed the agenda item. The activists\u2019 document was amended to say: \u201cUpdate: THANK YOU TO ALL THAT SUPPORTED SK! The School Committee voted to remove the agenda items that would have placed the Superintendent on leave. Community comment was inspiring and hopeful.&nbsp; Keep making good trouble, folks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But on June 11, the volunteer organization <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendsofskschools.org\/contact\"><span>Friends of South Kingstown Schools<\/span><\/a><span> (FOSKS), which was supportive of the $85 million bond, said it found out that one of its board members had secretly obtained the students\u2019 information from Savano and pressured it to \u201cbury\u201d and \u201cdistract\u201d from the mailer scandal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>FOSKS said it removed Stacy Bodziony from its board, saying \u201cWe are deeply disturbed that, in the weeks following April 24, 2021, there was no effort made by Ms. Bodziony nor Ms. Savastano to share with us any details regarding the circumstances surrounding the access and release of student directory information for the purposes of this AFL-CIO mailer.
