Median inflation expectations at the three-year horizon increased from 3.1% to 3.6%, the second-highest level in this series, behind only the reading from August 2013. The increase at both horizons is particularly pronounced among respondents age 60 and over and among those with a high school degree or less.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Median inflation uncertainty \u2014 or the uncertainty expressed regarding future inflation outcomes \u2014 increased sharply at the short- and medium-term horizons. Both measures are well above the levels observed before the outbreak of COVID-19.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>In May, the inflation rate measured via the Consumer Price Index (CPI) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-monthly-inflation-again-passes-economists-expectations-highest-annual-rate-in-more-than-12-years\"><span>increased<\/span><\/a><span> to 5% \u2014 its highest level in over a decade. Nevertheless, the Federal Reserve and the Biden administration\u2019s Treasury Department \u2014 which oversee the United States\u2019s monetary and fiscal policy, respectively \u2014 are both maintaining a dovish approach to inflation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Fed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fed-expects-key-rates-near-zero-through-2023-9b9a335a1ce05d69fc97a1d6197371ab\"><span>plans<\/span><\/a><span> to keep interest rates near zero through the next two years \u2014 a benchmark that entails purchasing $120 billion in Treasury bonds every month. In response to skyrocketing inflation, however, the Fed may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/11\/markets-await-the-feds-meeting-in-the-week-ahead.html\"><span>amend<\/span><\/a><span> this policy during its June meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, in a recent interview with Bloomberg News, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/despite-skyrocketing-inflation-janet-yellen-will-keep-pushing-for-biden-spending-agenda\"><span>stated<\/span><\/a><span> that \u201cif we ended up with a slightly higher interest rate environment\u201d as a result of President Biden\u2019s federal spending proposals, it would \u201cactually be a plus for society\u2019s point of view and the Fed\u2019s point of view.\u201d She also stated that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/nonpartisan-economists-say-bidens-infrastructure-plan-will-decrease-economic-growth\"><i><span>American Jobs Plan<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-american-families-plan-is-far-from-a-new-deal-economic-boon\"><i><span>American Families Plan<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>, and other omnibus bills are \u201cmeant as investments to address long-standing needs of our economy\u201d rather than \u201cstimulus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Survey of Consumer Expectations also revealed that households\u2019 expectations for the probability of losing one\u2019s job decreased, while expectations for the probability of finding a job and seeing higher earnings rose sharply.
