(Sarah Silbiger\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt is a president\u2019s constitutional right to nominate a Supreme Court justice, and it is the Senate\u2019s constitutional right to act as a check on a president and withhold its consent,\u201d McConnell said in 2016, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/03\/16\/470664561\/mcconnell-blocking-supreme-court-nomination-about-a-principle-not-a-person\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR<\/a>. \u201cI believe the overwhelming view of the Republican Conference in the Senate is that this nomination should not be filled, this vacancy should not be filled by this lame duck president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe American people are perfectly capable of having their say on this issue, so let\u2019s give them a voice. Let\u2019s let the American people decide. The Senate will appropriately revisit the matter when it considers the qualifications of the nominee the next president nominates, whoever that might be,\u201d he reportedly continued.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell was criticized in October for pushing through and confirming Supreme Court Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2020\/10\/27\/biden-amy-coney-barrett-americans-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amy Coney Barrett<\/a> so close to the presidential election.
