Times, \u201cThe March 25 protest was over the city\u2019s displacement of individuals experiencing homelessness and deconstruction of an encampment they had built on the banks of Echo Park.\u201d The outlet reported, \u201cThe city had moved in with crews to clear the area and close the park for renovation, with Los Angeles Police officers there in large number to enforce the closure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Times previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/homeless-housing\/story\/2021-03-25\/echo-park-homeless-encampment-protests-target-lapd\">reported<\/a> that \u201cskirmishes erupted\u201d between law enforcement and protesters and \u201cbottles and other objects were thrown at officers.\u201d Police <a href=\"https:\/\/losangeles.cbslocal.com\/2021\/03\/26\/la-shutting-down-echo-park-lake-indefinitely-homeless-camps-being-cleared-out\/\">said<\/a> some demonstrators used high-intensity strobe lights in an attempt to blind them. Times reporter James Queally, Spectrum News 1\u2019s Kate Cagle, and two others covering the demonstration for an alternative progressive outlet called Knock L.A.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.371323529412\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;Wait. A progressive coalition of activist groups blamed Democratic Councilman Mitch O\u2019Farrell, whose district includes Echo Park, for their displacement.<\/p>\n<p>The park was closed for two months for extensive cleaning, repair, and renovation. The project cost more than $1 million. Sanitation crews had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxla.com\/video\/937767\">reportedly<\/a> removed syringes, guns, machetes, and according to O\u2019Farrell\u2019s office, more than 700 pounds of biological waste.<\/p>\n<p>When the park reopened to the public last month, city officials vowed to enforce a litany of rules moving forward, including a municipal code banning tents and camping in L.A. parks.
