Ron Johnson (R-WI) for one week after his account uploaded a video that was found to have violated Google\u2019s policy regarding medical misinformation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe removed the video in accordance with our COVID-19 medical misinformation policies, which don\u2019t allow content that encourages people to use Hydroxychloroquine or Ivermectin to treat or prevent the virus,\u201d a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/youtube-suspends-gop-sen-ron-johnson-s-account-says-he-n1270569\"><span>NBC News<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In YouTube\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/youtube\/answer\/9891785?hl=en&#038;ref_topic=9282436\"><span>detailed<\/span><\/a><span> \u201cCOVID-19 medical misinformation policy,\u201d the Big Tech giant declares that it \u201c<\/span><span>doesn\u2019t allow content about COVID-19 that poses a serious risk of egregious harm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYouTube doesn\u2019t allow content that spreads medical misinformation that contradicts local health authorities\u2019 or the World Health Organization\u2019s (WHO) medical information about COVID-19,\u201d YouTube continued. According to its guidelines, this is limited to content that contradicts WHO or local health authorities\u2019 guidance on treatment, prevention, diagnosis, transmission, social distancing and self isolation guidelines, or the existence of COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/06\/11\/youtube-bans-sen-ron-johnson-for-discussing-early-treatment-of-covid-19\/\">The Federalist<\/a>, in the allegedly offending video, Johnson was criticizing both the Trump and Biden administrations for \u201cnot only ignoring but working against robust research [on] the use of cheap, generic drugs to be repurposed for early treatment of COVID.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt always baffled me that there was such a concerted effort to deny the American public the type of robust exploration research into early treatment early in this pandemic,\u201d Johnson said, according to The Federalist, claiming that some studies have shown that \u201cboth Hydroxychloroquine and Ivermectin\u201d are \u201cincredibly safe\u201d drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>YouTube\u2019s policies specifically reference the drugs discussed by Johnson, directing users not to post content on YouTube if it includes \u201c<\/span><span>Content that recommends use of Ivermectin or Hydroxychloroquine for the treatment of COVID-19\u201d or \u201cClaims that Ivermectin or Hydroxychloroquine are effective treatments for COVID-19.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The National Institutes of Health (NIH) currently advises against the use of Hydroxychloroquine, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/nih-halts-clinical-trial-hydroxychloroquine\"><span>saying<\/span><\/a><span> that a study \u201cshows treatment does no harm, but provides no benefit.\u201d Meanwhile, the NIH has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov\/therapies\/antiviral-therapy\/ivermectin\/\"><span>stated<\/span><\/a><span> that \u201c<\/span><span>There are insufficient data for the COVID-19 Treatment Guidelines Panel (the Panel) to recommend either for or against the use of ivermectin for the treatment of COVID-19.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The World Health Organization also advises against Hydroxychloroquine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWHO does not recommend hydroxychloroquine to prevent COVID-19. This recommendation is based on six trials with more than 6000 participants who did not have COVID-19 and received hydroxychloroquine,\u201d wrote the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/q-a-detail\/coronavirus-disease-(covid-19)-hydroxychloroquine\"><span>WHO<\/span><\/a><span> in April 2021. \u201cUsing hydroxychloroquine for prevention had little or no effect on preventing illness, hospitalization or death from COVID-19. Taking hydroxychloroquine to prevent COVID-19 may increase the risk of diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, drowsiness and headache.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a statement, Johnson\u2019s office slammed YouTube for their actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYouTube\u2019s ongoing Covid censorship proves they have accumulated too much unaccountable power. Big Tech and mainstream media believe they are smarter than medical doctors who have devoted their lives to science and use their skills to save lives,\u201d Johnson said. <\/span><span>\u201cThey have decided there is only one medical viewpoint allowed and it is the viewpoint dictated by government agencies. How many lives will be lost as a result? How many lives could have been saved with a free exchange of medical ideas? Government-sanctioned censorship of ideas and speech should concern us all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The news comes as an observational study, <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.05.28.21258012v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"slk:published by medRxiv\" data-rapid_p=\"18\" data-v9y=\"1\">published by medRxiv<\/a>, found that \u201cantimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine, along with zinc, could increase the coronavirus survival rate by as much as nearly 200% if distributed at higher doses to ventilated patients with a severe version of the illness,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/study-shows-hydroxychloroquine-zinc-treatments-210300816.html\">Yahoo!
