(Karl Mondon\/Bay Area News Group via AP)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5>OAN Newsroom<br \/>UPDATED 8:05 AM PT \u2013 Friday, June 11, 2021<\/h5>\n<p>Democrats in California are taking aim at federal judge after the state\u2019s attorney general appealed a ruling, which overturned the Golden State\u2019s so-called \u201cassault weapons ban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a press conference on Thursday, Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the appeal was on file. The measure comes after U.S. District Judge Roger Bonitez said the states three-decade ban was unconstitutional and infringes on the right of law-abiding citizens to bear arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we can agree the decision was disappointing, and the reasoning such as equating assault weapons to Swiss-army knives and false claims that COVID-19 vaccines have killed more people than mass shootings was shocking,\u201d Bonta stated.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/BREAKING?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#BREAKING<\/a>: We&#8217;ve appealed the district court\u2019s decision that overturned CA&#8217;s decades-old assault weapons ban.<\/p>\n<p>Equating firearms that have been used in many of the deadliest mass shootings in this country with Swiss Army knives has no basis in law or fact.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/treOYf3vsr\">https:\/\/t.co\/treOYf3vsr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rob Bonta (@AGRobBonta) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AGRobBonta\/status\/1403038849605914625?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In 1989, California became the first state to ban the specific class of weapon after a mass shooting took the lives of five children. Currently, a 30 day stay of the judge\u2019s decision remains in effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts nothing that\u2019s exotic, it\u2019s nothing that\u2019s unusual; these are semi automatic rifles that people use for sport hunting and especially self defense,\u201d stated Michael Schwartz, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sandiegocountygunowners.com\/\">San Diego Gun Owners PAC<\/a>. \u201cThe best part of the decision is that the judge is pointing out that, \u2018hey this is a firearm like any other firearm\u2019 and that the right really has to do with self defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom joined the attorney general in slamming Judge Bonitez while denouncing him as a \u201cstone cold ideologue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it Parkland? Is it Southerland Springs? Is it San Bernardino? Is it Powey?\u201d asked Newsom. \u201cYou got another 10 minutes? I could continue down that damn list. I said it the other day, what the hell is wrong with us? We\u2019re better than this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firearmspolicy.org\/\">Firearms Policy Coalition<\/a>, however, condemned Newsom\u2019s\u2019 \u201coutrageous and callous personal attacks\u201d on the federal judge.
