People slander their enemies. The anonymous posts appear high in Google results for the names of victims. Then the websites charge the victims thousands of dollars to take the posts down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis circle of slander has been lucrative for the websites and associated middlemen \u2014 and devastating for victims,\u201d they claimed. \u201cNow Google is trying to break the loop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Google is now planning to amend its search algorithm so that websites \u201c<\/span><span>which operate under domains like BadGirlReport.date and PredatorsAlert.us\u201d will be hidden from results when someone searches for a reported victim of \u201conline slander.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In addition, Google has introduced the notion of \u201cknown victims.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhen people report to the company that they have been attacked on sites that charge to remove posts,\u201d the Times explained. \u201cGoogle will automatically suppress similar content when their names are searched for. \u2018Known victims\u2019 also includes people whose nude photos have been published online without their consent, allowing them to request suppression of explicit results for their names.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI doubt it will be a perfect solution, certainly not right off the bat. But I think it really should have a significant and positive impact,\u201d said Google\u2019s vice president for global David Graff. \u201cWe can\u2019t police the web, but we can be responsible citizens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This move represents a significant change in Google\u2019s historical \u201chands-off\u201d approach to their search algorithm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to the report, <\/span><span>University of Virginia professor Danielle Citron\u00a0<\/span><span>pressured<\/span><span> Google a decade ago to \u201cblock so-called revenge porn from coming up in a search of someone\u2019s name.\u201d Initially, Google resisted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to Citron, the Big Tech giant\u2019s philosophy was: \u201cWe never touch search, no way, nohow. If we start touching search results, it\u2019s a one-way ratchet to a curated internet and we\u2019re no longer neutral.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As the Times report noted, Google\u2019s \u201chands-off\u201d attitude was demonstrated in 2004, when people questioned why anti-Semitic websites were listed when users searched for the term, \u201cJew.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIf you recently used Google to search for the word \u2018Jew,\u2019 you may have seen results that were very disturbing. We assure you that the views expressed by the sites in your results are not in any way endorsed by Google. We\u2019d like to explain why you\u2019re seeing these results when you conduct this search,\u201d Google wrote in a since-deleted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20040607132019\/http:\/\/www.google.com\/explanation.html\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cA site\u2019s ranking in Google\u2019s search results is automatically determined by computer algorithms using thousands of factors to calculate a page\u2019s relevance to a given query. Sometimes subtleties of language cause anomalies to appear that cannot be predicted. A search for \u2018Jew\u2019 brings up one such unexpected result.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Google then explained that \u201c<\/span><span>the word \u2018Jew\u2019 is often used in an anti-Semitic context,\u201d and that \u201cSomeone searching for information on Jewish people would be more likely to enter terms like \u2018Judaism,\u2019 \u2018Jewish people,\u2019 or \u2018Jews\u2019 than the single word \u2018Jew.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur search results are generated completely objectively and are independent of the beliefs and preferences of those who work at Google. Some people concerned about this issue have created online petitions to encourage us to remove particular links or otherwise adjust search results. Because of our objective and automated ranking system, Google cannot be influenced by these petitions.
