Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics, revealed the details about the new series on Thursday, adding that the animated show is meant for adults and not children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot for children, but we have a Mindy Kaling project called \u2018Velma\u2019 because she was excited to re-imagine what\u00a0<em>Scooby-Doo\u00a0<\/em>would be like if\u00a0Velma\u00a0were of East Asian descent and lived in a different world,\u201d Ascheim <a href=\"https:\/\/worldscreenevents.com\/festivals\/keynote-warnermedias-tom-ascheim\/\">said<\/a> Thursday at the at the\u00a0TV Kids Summer Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Like her new character, Kaling is of Asian descent, as her parents are from India. So allowing our creators to play with our IP is super powerful,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The changes to the beloved,\u00a0bespectacled character prompted raised eyebrows from some Scooby Doo\u00a0fans on Twitter, who expressed skepticism about whether Kaling\u2019s Velma could really be counted as the same character.\u00a0The hashtag #NotMyVelma quickly cropped up among fans tweeting their disapproval.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell she\u2019s not Velma then is she,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Bolverk15\/status\/1402942203832508420\">wrote<\/a> one Twitter user, adding sardonically, \u201cGonna make a tv show about Luke Skywalker, except it\u2019s inspired by sex in the city and actually about a woman living in ancient Greece and call it a \u201cdifferent interpretation\u201d of the character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201cAs an east asian myself, i think this is just woke-washing and unnessary. Moreover, i find it offensive that asians are always protrayed as nerdy. This is not ok. Wokeism has taken another L here. <\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\">#notmyvelma,\u201d one user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Scrooge_mcduche\/status\/1403214968904851460\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy even make it a Velma series? Just make a new character?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/literaturedevil\/status\/1402819549754499075\">wrote<\/a> another.<\/p>\n<p>Some on Twitter pointed out that Velma has already been played by an actress with Asian ancestry. Hayley Kiyoko, who is part-Japanese, tackled the role in the\u00a0Scooby-Doo TV movies\u00a0The Mystery Begins in 2009 and the following year\u2019s Curse of the Lake Monster.<\/p>\n<p>HBO Max announced in February that \u201cVelma\u201d was awarded a\u00a010-episode order.<\/p>\n<p>Around the time of the announcement, Kaling clapped back at a Twitter user who complained in a now-deleted tweet about her voicing Velma herself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarring Mindy Kaling?\u201d the tweeter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/popculture\/mindy-kaling-epically-destroys-troll-over-scooby-doo-news-t208927\">reportedly<\/a> wrote\u00a0in response to the news along with a gif from \u201cThe Office\u201d of Michael Scott yelling \u201cNo!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wrote the episode of The Office this gif is from,\u201d Kaling responded in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>The original Scooby-Doo series debuted on CBS as a Saturday morning cartoon\u00a0in 1969.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
