According to court documents, she also tried to organize a second escape after the drug boss was imprisoned a year later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cShe also pleaded guilty to a money-laundering conspiracy charge and to engaging in transactions with a foreign narcotics trafficker,\u201d the AP noted.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/keegan_hamilton\/status\/1402985032990425096\"><span class=\"s1\">thread<\/span><\/a>, Vice News reporter Keegan Hamilton described the hearing, writing:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Judge: \u201cTo summarize, if you plead guilty in this case and I accept your guilty plea, you will give up all those rights I just explained to you, because there will not be any trial and there will probably be no appeal\u2026\u00a0do you understand that?\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Emma Coronel: \u201cS\u00ed\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"14.414414414414\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">El Chapo&#8217;s wife Emma Coronel Aispuro is set to appear in federal court this morning in Washington, DC, where she&#8217;s expected to plead guilty to international drug charges. <\/p>\n<p>The hearing starts in about 20 minutes \u2014\u00a0will cover as it unfolds, stay tuned for updates on this thread\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Keegan Hamilton (@keegan_hamilton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/keegan_hamilton\/status\/1402985032990425096?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 10, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hamilton added that Prosecutor Anthony Nardozzi said Coronel \u201c\u2019controlled commercial and residential properties\u2019 owned by El Chapo and \u2018derived income from them by renting them.\u2019 Says she violated the Kingpin Act b\/c she\u2019s a US citizen and had \u2018financial entanglements\u2019 w\/ a sanctioned narcotics trafficker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to the Obama White House <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/the-press-office\/fact-sheet-overview-foreign-narcotics-kingpin-designation-act\"><span class=\"s1\">archives<\/span><\/a>, \u201cThe Kingpin Act became law on December 3, 1999.\u00a0 Its purpose is to deny significant foreign narcotics traffickers, their related businesses, and their operatives access to the U.S. financial system and to prohibit all trade and transactions between the traffickers and U.S. companies and individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In 2009, former President Barack Obama identified the Sinaloa Cartel \u2014 \u201cEl Chapo\u2019s\u201d criminal group \u2014 as \u201cforeign persons\u2026appropriate for sanctions pursuant to the Kingpin Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">AP reported that Nardozzi said Coronel \u201cserved as a go-between\u201d to bring messages to members of the cartel after \u201cEl Chapo\u201d was taken into custody \u201cand also conspired with Guzman\u2019s sons to \u2018plan and coordinate\u2019 his prison escapes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Per Hamilton\u2019s Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/keegan_hamilton\/status\/1403003531867561992\"><span class=\"s1\">thread<\/span><\/a>, the Judge asked Coronel, \u201cAre you entering this plea because you are guilty and for no other reason?\u201d Emma Coronel answered, \u201cS\u00ed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hamilton <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/keegan_hamilton\/status\/1403001300606877711\"><span class=\"s1\">noted<\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p><i>Judge explains Coronel faces a max sentence of life in prison under count 1 of her information (for drug conspiracy) \u2014 and a minimum of 10 years, but he has discretion to go above or below that. \u201cNothing will be certain\u201d until judge gets pre-sentence report.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Coronel is 31 years old and is a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico since she was born in California. Per NPR, \u201c[s]he is believed to be Guzm\u00e1n\u2019s third wife, though there are rumors he has a fourth. The pair married when she was 18 and he was 39 and they have twin girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In 2019, Joaqu\u00edn \u201cEl Chapo\u201d Guzm\u00e1n was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ice.gov\/news\/releases\/joaquin-el-chapo-guzman-found-guilty-all-charges-us-court\"><span class=\"s1\">found guilty<\/span><\/a> on all charges in U.S. court.
