After police cleared the area, then-President Donald Trump walked through in order to take a photo in front of St. John\u2019s church holding a bible.<\/p>\n<p>Legacy media was quick to report that police had cleared the area so that Trump could walk through for the photo. Cable news programs including <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1402718252233641994?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodmorningamerica.com\/news\/video\/police-tear-gas-push-back-peaceful-protesters-trump-71015255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Good Morning America<\/a> slammed the former president for allegedly tear-gassing peaceful protesters, and even President Joe Biden and Kamala Harris tweeted about the incident. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/09\/trump-thanks-inspector-general-exonerating-lafayette-park\/\">(RELATED: Trump Thanks Inspector General For \u2018Exonerating\u2019 Him Over Lafayette Park)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"7.8446215139442\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Joe Biden and Kamala Harris both tweeted that Trump had protesters tear gassed for a photo op.<\/p>\n<p>A new government report says that didn\u2019t happen. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FreeBeacon?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@FreeBeacon<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/GAnmrJRznv\">https:\/\/t.co\/GAnmrJRznv<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WcSqVH7xVa\">pic.twitter.com\/WcSqVH7xVa<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chuck Ross (@ChuckRossDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChuckRossDC\/status\/1402742406995382278?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 9, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A Wednesday <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/09\/protesters-werent-forcibly-cleared-lafayette-park-because-donald-trump-photo-op-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a> from Interior Department Inspector General Mark Greenblatt determined that the Park Police had planned to clear the area long before anyone knew of Trump\u2019s plans to take the photo, and that the president\u2019s plans had no influence over the police\u2019s decision to clear it. Washington, D.C., police did use tear gas but the Park Police did not, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/09\/protesters-werent-forcibly-cleared-lafayette-park-because-donald-trump-photo-op-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Park police had cleared the area in order to install extra fencing after the riots that took place in the city May 30 and 31, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the new report, several <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/09\/legacy-media-trump-lafayette-square-bible-photo-op-peaceful-protesters-park-police\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media outlets<\/a> that had reported the story incorrectly at first had, at time of publication, still failed to change their headlines.<\/p>\n<p>NPR\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/06\/02\/867578108\/peaceful-protesters-tear-gassed-to-clear-way-for-trump-church-visit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">headline<\/a> from June 2 still reads \u201cPeaceful Protesters Tear Gassed To Clear Way For Trump Church Visit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtesters Dispersed With Tear Gas So Trump Could Pose at Church,\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/01\/us\/politics\/trump-st-johns-church-bible.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Times<\/a> declared. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/06\/02\/trump-protests-military-force-296368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Politico<\/a> said in a headline that Trump faced \u201ccondemnation for clearing protesters\u201d and \u201cthreatening military force,\u201d adding that the president was \u201cspurring a violent incursion against apparently peaceful protesters for the purposes of staging a political photo opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both of these headlines remain unedited.<\/p>\n<p>Vanity Fair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2020\/06\/white-house-tear-gas-protesters-so-trump-could-have-a-photo-op\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unedited headline<\/a> boldly declares, \u201cThe White House Tear Gassed Protesters So Trump Could Have A Photo Op.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Post ran several articles about the incident, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/outlook\/2020\/06\/03\/priest-stjohns-church-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one<\/a> titled, \u201cI\u2019m a priest.
