Its website states:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><em>Attendance matters for students at all grade levels. Students who attend school regularly are more likely to read at grade level, and to build a strong foundation as they move from preschool and kindergarten to high school. On the other hand, students who are chronically absent are at risk of falling behind. \u201cChronically absent\u201d means a student is missing 10% of the school year. It doesn\u2019t matter whether the absences are excused or unexcused. Each day represents lost time.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Every Day Matters offers helping hints such as \u201cTips for Getting Out the Door\u201d as well as advice for parents on when children are too sick to attend school.<\/p>\n<p>Oregonians for Liberty in Education <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libertyineducation.org\/blog\/the-oregon-department-of-educationpaid-50k-for-two-nikole-hannah-jones-webinars\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12.277777777778\">\n<p><em>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdxteachers.org\/1619\">Friday May 7<\/a>, Hannah-Jones spoke to Oregon\u2019s teachers on \u201c1619: Centering Black History and Black Futures in Oregon.\u201d On <a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/ORED\/bulletins\/2d87265\">Thursday May 13<\/a>, she spoke first to students on \u201cthe importance of black history, as well as how this history has helped to build our society today\u201d and then to teachers on \u201chow the historical events detailed in the 1619 Project can and should inform how we create the conditions of belonging for Black students, families, and educators in Oregon.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Oregonians for Liberty in Education contacted ODE Rules Coordinator Jeremy Wartz, as Ben Zeisloft of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=17595\">Campus Reform<\/a> reported; Wartz acknowledged Hannah-Jones was paid $25,000 for each speech.<\/p>\n<p>Zeisloft noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><em>Wartz explained that staff members \u201cauthorized the expenses in line with the goals of the program and given the deep need for focal student groups, including black students and their families, to feel a sense of connection at this time and to support educators in creating the conditions for culturally responsive pedagogy and practice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>ODE Communications Director Marc Siegel told Campus Reform, \u201cCentering the experience of black students and families helps lack students feel valued, reflects blacks\u2019 contribution in American history which creates black student\u2019s sense of belonging in the classroom.\u201d He added that \u201cfeeling welcome in the classroom boosts attendance, which boosts academic performance. \u2026 At the center of Oregon\u2019s work on equity is attention to what it means to belong and to create conditions in school engagement that support student belonging. The experiences of black students and families can and must be centered in our state, including the fullness of black histories and black futures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Oregonians for Liberty in Education stated, \u201cDiverting funds from \u2018Every Day Matters,\u2019 ODE\u2019s program to provide practical solutions to support showing up for school, is concerning. The program provides toolkits for teachers and families so at-risk students can connect to services and learn executive function skills and healthy habits.
