After pushback from activists, though, the department changed its wording in the filing, The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/religion\/2021\/06\/09\/biden-justice-lgbtq-lesbian-gay-christian-college-university-bostock-equality-act\/?utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_campaign=wp_main&#038;utm_medium=social\">reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div readability=\"8\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"14.5\">\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\"><em>However, in a possible sign of the pressure on the administration, the Justice Department amended the document Wednesday, taking out the word \u201cvigorously\u201d to describe its defense of the religious exemption and retaining multiple uses of the word \u201cadequate.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"font--body font-copy gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md \" data-el=\"text\">The\u00a0department also \u201cremoved wording that said the Education Department and the Christian schools \u201cshare the same \u2018ultimate objective\u2019 \u2026 namely, to uphold the Religious Exemption as it is currently applied,&#8217;\u201d the Post added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<p data-el=\"text\">The Post noted that some LGBT activists were \u201cdisturbed\u201d by the filing, likely prompting the DOJ to amend their wording.<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\">\u201cWhat this means is that the government is now aligning itself with anti-LGBTQ hate in order to vigorously defend an exemption that everyone knows causes severe harm to LGBTQ students using taxpayer money,\u201d complained Paul Carlos Southwick, director of the Religious Exemption Accountability Project. \u201cIt will make our case harder if the federal government plans to vigorously defend it like they have indicated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-el=\"text\">However, other activists seemed to acknowledge that the Biden administration was merely paying lip service, using the terminology as an effort to \u201cblock conservative religious groups from becoming parties to the lawsuit,\u201d per the Post:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p data-el=\"text\"><em>To others, including supporters of President Biden, the administration had no other option, since federal civil rights law regarding education \u2014 called Title IX \u2014 exempts religion. They noted the purpose of the department\u2019s filing, which was to block conservative religious groups from becoming parties to the lawsuit, arguing the agency can defend the exemption on its own.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"remainder-content\">\n<section>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"7.317880794702\">\n<div readability=\"10.331125827815\">Nonprofit legal group Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedia.org\/case\/hunter-v-us-department-education\"><em>Hunter v. the U.S. Department of Education<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is an attempt to \u201cprevent any students from using tuition grants, student loans, and any other federal financial assistance at schools that operate according to Christian beliefs on sexuality.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"teaser-content\">\n<section readability=\"4.4409620991254\">\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"13.816326530612\">\n<p data-el=\"text\">\u201cThis lawsuit wants the federal government to tell Christian schools, \u2018To continue accepting students who have federal financial aid, all you have to do is to start acting contrary to your own beliefs.\u2019 That\u2019s neither reasonable nor constitutional,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedia.org\/case\/hunter-v-us-department-education\">explained<\/a> ADF Senior Counsel and Vice President of U.S. Litigation David Cortman. \u201cNo court should grant a radical request to rewrite federal law and strong-arm religious colleges by stripping their students of much-needed financial aid.
