USA Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2021\/06\/09\/houston-methodist-hospital-workers-refuse-covid-vaccine-get-suspended\/7616446002\/\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> that an \u201cadditional 285 employees received a medical or religious exemption, and 332 were granted deferrals for pregnancy and other reasons, Boom said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Monday, the hospital released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/news\/local\/houston-methodist-hospital-workers-walkout-vaccine-requirement\/285-cc9498e3-8b96-493e-b258-d81280ffd690\">statement<\/a>, per KHOU:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><i>Today is the deadline for Houston Methodist employees to comply with the mandatory COVID-19 vaccine policy. We are proud to report that almost 100 percent of our 26,000 employees have complied, making the right decision to fulfill their sacred obligation to protect our patients. Unfortunately, a few employees have not met the vaccine requirements and are inviting other employees to join them as they end their shifts today. We fully support the right of our employees to peacefully gather on their own time, but it is unacceptable to even suggest they abandon their patients to participate in this activity. We have faith that our employees will continue putting our patients first. It is unfortunate that today\u2019s milestone of Houston Methodist becoming the safest hospital system in the country is being overshadowed by a few disgruntled employees.<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAs the first hospital system to mandate COVID-19 vaccines we were prepared for this,\u201d Boom said. \u201cThe criticism is sometimes the price we pay for leading medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI feel betrayed a little bit,\u201d\u00a0Amanda Rivera, who is not part of the lawsuit, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khou.com\/article\/news\/local\/houston-methodist-hospital-workers-walkout-vaccine-requirement\/285-cc9498e3-8b96-493e-b258-d81280ffd690\"><span class=\"s1\">KHOU-TV<\/span><\/a>\u00a0as she departed from the building on Monday. \u201cI worked in the ER. It was crazy during the pandemic. We were short-staffed. The hospital was over capacity with patients. It was just a lot. Now for them to come and do this is like a slap in the face.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kara Shepherd is a labor and delivery nurse who is involved in the lawsuit. Shepherd said, \u201cAll last year, through the COVID pandemic, we came to work and did our jobs. We did what we were asked. This year, we\u2019re basically told we\u2019re disposable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As The Daily Wire previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/texas-hospital-employees-sue-over-covid-19-vaccine-mandate\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>, \u201cHouston Methodist Hospital, which manages eight hospitals, gave employees until June 7 to get the vaccine or they could be suspended or fired, the lawsuit claims. So 117 unvaccinated employees banded together and filed suit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe lawsuit noted that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not fully approved the vaccines, instead issuing only emergency use authorization. They allege that the hospital is \u2018illegally requiring its employees to be injected with an experimental vaccine as a condition of employment,\u2019\u201d The Daily Wire noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The complaint also references the Nuremberg Code, which \u201cbans forced medical experimentations, again in effect arguing that the vaccine is experimental and potentially unsafe,\u201d Fox News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/texas-hospital-lawsuit-forced-vaccination-policy\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Attorney Jared Woodfill, who filed the suit, said the hospital is simply trying to earn profits. \u201cTo promote its business and increase profits at the expense of other health care providers and their employees\u2019 health, Defendants advertise to the public that they \u2018require all employees and employed physicians to get a COVID-19 vaccine.\u2019 More clearly, Defendants\u2019 employees are being forced to serve as human \u2018guinea pigs\u2019 to increase Defendants\u2019 profits,\u201d Woodfill <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/117-employees-sue-houston-methodist-hospital-requiring-covid\/story?id=77977011\"><span class=\"s1\">told<\/span><\/a>\u00a0ABC News.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last week, however, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) said businesses can require that their employees be vaccinated against COVID-19 without breaking federal law, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/federal-agency-says-employers-can-require-employees-to-get-covid-19-vaccine\"><span class=\"s1\">reported<\/span><\/a> by The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Among other items included in the updated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeoc.gov\/newsroom\/eeoc-issues-updated-covid-19-technical-assistance\"><span class=\"s1\">guidance<\/span><\/a> released on Friday, The Daily Wire noted that \u201cthe EEOC said employers must make \u2018reasonable accommodations\u2019 for employees who don\u2019t get vaccinated because of religious beliefs, pregnancy, or a disability.
