Much of the discussion focused on being good fathers.<\/p>\n<p>But Cooper asked Obama about the state of the world four years after Obama told voters he would consider it a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/obama-youll-be-insulting-me-if-you-dont-vote-aaron-bandler\">personal insult<\/a>\u201d if they elected Donald Trump as his successor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you tell the story of race in America enough?\u201d Cooper asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, look, I tried,\u201d Obama replied, adding \u201cwe are still not fully <a href=\"http:\/\/therightswriter.com\/2008\/08\/baracks-tragic-emphasis\/\">reconciled with our history<\/a>\u201d which makes it \u201c hard for the majority in this country of white Americans to recognize that, look, you can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/dont-let-anyone-ever-tell-you-country-isnt-great-ben-shapiro?amp\">proud of this country<\/a> and its traditions and its history and our forefathers, and yet\u201d also emphasize the \u201cterrible stuff [that] happened, and that the vestiges of that linger and continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then he pivoted to one of the first media <em>faux pas <\/em>of his presidency, when he attacked police for \u201cacting stupidly\u201d in arresting Harvard Professor Henry Louis \u201cSkip\u201d Gates in June 2009. Neighbors called the police when they saw Gates, whose front door had jammed shut, trying to force his way into his back door. But when police officers asked him to produce identification, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/complete-timeline-race-relations-under-obama-harry-khachatrian\">refused and began ranting<\/a> that the police were racist. The officers eventually arrested him for disorderly conduct.<\/p>\n<p>Then-President Obama admitted that, \u201cnot having been there and not seeing all the facts,\u201d he didn\u2019t actually know \u201cwhat role race played in\u201d the arrest. \u201cBut I think it\u2019s fair to say \u2026 that the Cambridge [Massachusetts] police acted stupidly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Obama blamed the backlash on racists unable to hear the truth about their retrograde country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell the story in the book about the situation where Skip Gates, a Harvard professor who\u2019s trying to get into his own house, gets arrested. And I\u2019m asked about it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only did that cause a firestorm,\u201d he said, \u201cbut subsequent polling showed that my support among white voters dropped more precipitously after that\u00a0\u2014\u00a0what should have been a minor, trivial incident\u00a0\u2014\u00a0than anything else during my presidency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s extraordinary,\u201d Cooper replied.<\/p>\n<p>Obama <a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/2106\/07\/csr.01.html\">said<\/a> the fact that Americans held him accountable for his own words \u201cgives a sense of the degree to which\u201d inherent bias is still \u201cdeep in us, and sometimes unconscious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also blamed \u201ccertain right-wing media venues\u201d for allegedly \u201cstoking the fear and resentment of a white population that is witnessing a changing America and seeing demographic changes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reality, the foot-in-mouth moment of the golden-tongued Obama unintentionally revealed his hostility to law enforcement, which would manifest itself throughout his eight years in office. Obama would give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/what-obama-said-about-cops-hours-dallas-massacre-james-barrett\">a charged speech <\/a>about alleged racial disparities in policing before gunmen killed five Dallas police officers and left six more wounded at a Black Lives Matter protest. When Obama left office in 2017, the executive director of the National Association of Police Organizations, William J. Johnson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/top-police-officer-obama-leaving-no-one-sorry-see-hank-berrien\">said<\/a>, \u201cNo one is sorry to see this guy go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Obama also touched on numerous other subjects, including cancel culture, media bias, how the D.C. \u201cestablishment\u201d should have squeezed Donald Trump, and he cited a discredited study about the number of words poor people hear as children.<\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Anderson Cooper Interview Obama On Legacy\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SKOVNLHuuWw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>What did Obama say about cancel culture?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Obama acknowledged that occasionally \u201ccancel culture\u201d goes too far, but his daughters have a good sense of when to draw the line.<\/p>\n<p>He said \u201cin conversations with my daughter\u201d he had seen \u201ca lot of the dangers of cancel culture, [that] we\u2019re just going to be condemning people all the time. At least among my daughters, they will acknowledge that, sometimes, among their peer group or in college campuses, you will see folks going overboard. But they have a pretty good sense of, \u2018Look, we don\u2019t expect everybody to be perfect. We don\u2019t expect everybody to be politically correct all the time. But we are going to call out institutions or individuals if they are being cruel, if they\u2019re discriminating against people. We do want to raise awareness.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What did Obama say about the two-party establishment, or Deep State, suppressing a conservative agenda?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Obama answered Anderson Cooper\u2019s softball question, \u201cDid you ever think it would get this dark?\u201d by saying that he expected the GOP Establishment to rein in Trump, only to see the former president outmaneuver the party\u2019s old guard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I thought that there were enough guardrails institutionally that even after Trump was elected that you would have the so-called Republican Establishment who would say, \u2018OK, you know, it\u2019s a problem.\u2019 \u2026 [W]e did not see that Republican Establishment say, \u2018Hold on, time out, that\u2019s not acceptable, that\u2019s not who we are,\u2019 but rather be cowed into accepting\u201d Trump and his agenda.<\/p>\n<p>Obama was also upset more Republicans weren\u2019t willing to be replaced in Congress by Democrats. \u201cI didn\u2019t expect that there would be so few people who would say, \u2018Well, I don\u2019t mind losing my office, because this is too important. America is too important.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Obama repeated the same, discredited study as Joe Biden when he told parents to turn on their record player<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cooper told Obama that, while reading a \u201cspeech you gave a while back,\u201d he read \u201ca figure I had never heard before, that by the age of three, if you grew up in a low-income family, you\u2019ve heard 30 million fewer words than a 3-year-old child in a well-off family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Obama replied that the study \u201cmeans by the time you show up in first grade, you are already significantly behind\u201d wealthier students. \u201cNow the good news is it turns out \u2026 kids are amazingly resilient, and they can catch up. But it also means that we have to make investments to ensure that they catch up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden made headlines during the third Democratic primary debate, when he told parents to \u201cmake sure you have the record player on at night.\u201d But National Public Radio once\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/ed\/2018\/06\/01\/615188051\/lets-stop-talking-about-the-30-million-word-gap\">explained<\/a> (at your expense) that the claim of a multimillion-word deficit between children is deeply flawed, no matter who refers to it:<\/p>\n<p><em>[D]id you know that the number comes from just one study, begun almost 40 years ago, with just 42 families? That some people argue it contained a built-in racial bias? Or that others, including the authors of a new study that calls itself a \u201cfailed replication,\u201d say it\u2019s just wrong?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Obama and CNN obviously didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What did he say about media bias on the Right and Left? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Obama, conservatives are more closed-minded than left-wing progressives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not symmetrical,\u201d he said. Media outlets that \u201cthe Right would consider liberal media, like CNN, you guys will still take Democrats to task for things. I think Democrats \u2014 L-rd knows, when I was president, I was getting a lot of incoming from my own base.\u00a0And so, it\u2019s not symmetrical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What did Obama say about the role of the media in promoting a worldview?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Obama, under whose presidency Americans\u2019 image continually fractured into separate and warring ethnic identities, said the media have to begin to coalesce Americans around a common orthodoxy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow do we start once again being able to tell a common story about where this country goes?\u201d he asked. \u201cThat is not just the job of politicians, although I think elected officials have an important role. That\u2019s where the media is going to have to play an important role.
