Jason Smith of Missouri challenged the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) director on the Biden administration\u2019s use of the term \u201cbirthing people\u201d at a Senate Budget Committee hearing Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Smith pointed to the OMB\u2019s replacement of the term women with \u201cbirthing people\u201d in their request for $26 million to reduce racial disparities and maternal mortality rates among women. When asked to clarify the meaning of the term, OMB Director Shalanda Young said that the Biden administration\u2019s language needs to be \u201cinclusive\u201d to all gender identities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are certain people who do not have gender identities that apply to female or male, so we think our language needs to be more inclusive in how we deal with complex issues,\u201d Young said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"11.137741046832\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJasonSmith?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepJasonSmith<\/a>: \u201cIs the admin\u2019s official policy to replace the term woman with birthing people?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Acting OMB Dir. Young: \u201cI think our official policy is to make sure when people get service from their government that they feel included and we\u2019re trying to use inclusive language\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4ABbD1Lr58\">pic.twitter.com\/4ABbD1Lr58<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Daily Caller (@DailyCaller) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DailyCaller\/status\/1402666106247122951?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 9, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, Young then argued that policy concerning women should ensure that maternal mortality rates for people of color decrease and have access to good quality healthcare, rather than focus on the language used to describe those impacted. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/07\/kruta-i-earned-the-name-mother-you-wont-demote-me-to-birthing-person\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: I Earned The Name \u2018Mother\u2019-You Won\u2019t Demote Me To \u2018Birthing Person\u2019)<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the underlying issues most important that your colleagues are working on is to try to ensure that those of color that are giving birth leave the hospital alive and that\u2019s the issue rather than the verbiage,\u201d she said. \u201cThe verbiage matters, but the underlying issue is extremely important and a lot of your colleagues are working hard on this because all of those giving birth should have access to the same quality healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Smith asked Young if the Biden administration has implemented a policy to replace the term \u2018woman\u2019 with \u2018birthing people,\u2019 she replied that the administration is focused on helping people \u201cget service from their government\u201d while also using \u201cinclusive language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Missouri Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/05\/06\/cori-bush-nancy-pelosi-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cori Bush<\/a> called women \u201cbirthing people\u201d on May 6 during a Democratic oversight committee hearing. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/02\/10\/human-milk-midwives-nurses-trans-inclusive-vocabulary-chestfeeding-birthing-parent-england-nhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">midwives are required<\/a> to use gender-neutral vocabulary including \u201cchestfeeding\u201d and \u201cbirthing parent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Republican Rep.
