When the user comes within one to two meters of an obstacle, the device beeps to warn of the impending danger,\u201d the outlet added.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.0573248407643\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A South Korean industrial designer has come up with a satirical solution for &#8216;smartphone zombies&#8217; who can&#8217;t take their eyes away from their screen long enough to prevent themselves from walking into an obstacle <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5TVhkVvQxa\">https:\/\/t.co\/5TVhkVvQxa<\/a> 1\/5 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/j3KnO8Pbi2\">pic.twitter.com\/j3KnO8Pbi2<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Reuters Tech News (@ReutersTech) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReutersTech\/status\/1401947542947086340?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 7, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is the look of future mankind with three eyes,\u201d Paeng said as he demonstrated the use of \u201cThe Third Eye\u201d around Seoul. \u201cAs we cannot take our eyes off from smartphones, the extra eye will be needed in future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPeople from modern society find it difficult to live an ordinary life without smartphones. It means they belong to the environment that the smartphones created,\u201d the 28-year-old told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/dyv7pj\/third-eye-robot-smartphone-texting-walking\"><span>VICE<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Paeng is a postgraduate in innovation design engineering at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. However, the Third Eye likely won\u2019t appear on store shelves, as Paeng designed it to make a statement rather than to sell it, reports VICE.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Third Eye uses a gyro sensor to measure the angle of the user\u2019s neck, while an ultrasonic sensor determines the existence of any approaching obstacles. Reuters added that both \u201csensors are linked to an open-source single-board microcontroller, with battery pack.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBy presenting this satirical solution, I hope people would recognize the severity of their gadget addiction and look back at themselves,\u201d Paeng said, describing the product as a warning, rather than a \u201c<\/span><span>real solution for smartphone addicts who won\u2019t pay attention to where they are going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One Seoul resident, Lee Ok-jo, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/third-eye-invented-to-stop-smartphone-zombies-from-bumping-into-things-12325182\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span>, \u201c<\/span><span>I thought he looked like an alien with an eye on his forehead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese days many young people can get into accidents while using their mobile phone. This would be good for them,\u201d they added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In an Instagram post explaining the invention, Paeng added the quote: \u201c<\/span><span>Phono Sapiens is a new human species born from Smartphones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cSmartphones have deeply permeated into modern people\u2019s lives, which made it difficult for us to live without them. This is perceived negatively, but the evolution to Phono Sapiens of mankind is undeniably a reality,\u201d Paeng continued. \u201cSo I accepted the fact that the human body is controlled by smartphones as a positive change. This gives us a broad perspective on the unfinished Phono sapiens. It also allows us to predict and propose fully evolved generation of Phono Sapiens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe third eye is its first evolution. We can\u2019t take our eyes off of our smartphones while walking. That\u2019s why we evolved to have a third eye. This eye moves separately from the rest of the eyes and it opens when our previous eyes are looking at smartphone,\u201d Paeng concluded. \u201cThis project is not just a common product design, but more of an ironic or critical design.
