For example, stems of Antarctic moss were successfully regrown from an over millennium-old sample covered by ice for about 400 years,\u201d wrote the scientists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cBdelloid rotifers, microscopic multicellular animals, are known for their ability to survive extremely low temperatures,\u201d the authors continued. While stating that previous reports suggested a survival after between six and ten years when frozen between \u221220\u00b0 to 0\u00b0C, the authors announced their findings which far outpaced that estimate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cHere, we report the survival of an obligate parthenogenetic bdelloid rotifer, recovered from northeastern Siberian permafrost radiocarbon-dated to \u223c24,000 years BP. This constitutes the longest reported case of rotifer survival in a frozen state,\u201d they said. \u201cWe confirmed the finding by identifying rotifer actin gene sequences in a metagenome obtained from the same sample.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>According to \u201cmorphological and molecular markers,\u201d the scientists discovered that the \u201crotifer belongs to the genus Adineta, and aligns with a contemporary Adineta vaga isolate collected in Belgium.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe takeaway is that a multicellular organism can be frozen and stored as such for thousands of years and then return back to life \u2014 a dream of many fiction writers,\u201d said Malavin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOf course, the more complex the organism, the trickier it is to preserve it,\u201d he notes with a big caveat for any would-be human hibernators: \u201cFor mammals, it\u2019s not currently possible.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Siberian rotifer is not the first exciting discovery found in permafrost. As explained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/arctic-animal-revived-after-being-frozen-for-24000-years-in-siberian-permafrost\/\">CNET<\/a>, \u201cancient viruses, a preserved paleolithic baby horse and an intact woolly rhinoceros\u201d have all been discovered in recent years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/scientists-waking-up-30000-year-old-giant-virus\/\"><span>September 2015<\/span><\/a><span>, French scientists reportedly \u201c<\/span><span>discovered a prehistoric virus called Mollivirus sibericum in the Siberian permafrost,\u201d and planned to \u201cwake up\u201d the 30,000-year-old virus, \u201cafter first verifying that it can\u2019t harm humans and animals.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, the discovery of a preserved paleolithic baby horse was reported in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/preserved-paleolithic-baby-horse-emerges-from-permafrost\/\"><span>August 2018<\/span><\/a><span>, with the \u201cperfectly preserved\u201d creature believed to have died between 30,000 to 40,000 years ago. <\/span><span>The fully preserved woolly rhinoceros was discussed in December 2020, \u201cexhumed from the permafrost in Yakutia, in the north of Russia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe animal lived around 20,000 and 50,000 years ago and was a juvenile.
