Citing his Christian faith, Cross asserted that he would not be conforming to\u00a0school district policies demanding LCPS staff use preferred pronouns and \u201callow gender-expansive and transgender students to participate in such activities in a manner consistent with the student\u2019s gender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love all of my students but I will never lie to them regardless of the consequences. I\u2019m a teacher but I serve God first and I will not affirm that a biological boy can be a girl and vice versa because it\u2019s against my religion, it\u2019s lying to a child, it\u2019s abuse to a child, and it\u2019s sinning against our God,\u201d Cross said in part.<\/p>\n<p>According to an email obtained by Fox News via the group Parents Against Critical Theory, Cross was placed on leave from Leesburg Elementary School two days after his statement. Shortly thereafter he <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedia.org\/press-release\/loudoun-county-schools-sued-after-suspending-teacher-speaking-public-school-board\">sued<\/a> the school district and was represented by ADF Senior Counsel Tyson Langhofer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPublic schools have no business compelling teachers to express ideological beliefs that they don\u2019t hold, nor do they have the right to suspend someone simply for respectfully providing their opinion at a public meeting,\u201d Langhofer said. \u201cThe school district favors a certain set of beliefs on a hotly contested issue, and it wants to force Tanner to cry uncle and endorse them as well. That\u2019s neither legal nor constitutional, and neither was the school\u2019s move to place Tanner on leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ADF further explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/adflegal.org\/blog\/can-teacher-object-proposed-school-district-policy-not-loudoun-county?sourcecode=10017333_r900\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"23\">\n<p><em>The bottom line is that the school district can\u2019t use teachers as a mouthpiece to promote a political agenda that violates their beliefs. But that is exactly what it is trying to do. And when Tanner used his constitutional right to speak up against the policy, officials punished him, propping him up as an example and sending the message that teachers must toe the ideological line or face the consequences.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It must stop.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The debate over the school\u2019s policy is about much more than pronouns. It\u2019s about scientific truth. It\u2019s whether the government can force an individual to endorse an ideology that conflicts with his beliefs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>And Tanner\u2019s case is about something even more important: it\u2019s about whether we have the right to voice dissenting opinions to our elected officials at all. Not everyone will agree with Tanner about what the school\u2019s policy should be.
