When you watch the news, when you read the news, what do you think we get wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, look, I think some of our muscles have atrophied a little bit over the last few years,\u201d Psaki <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dcexaminer\/status\/1401573095849095171\">said<\/a>, undoubtedly unable to believe her luck. She said only that people have forgotten how long and \u201cmessy the process of negotiating, and the process of getting legislation across the finish line, can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Psaki seemed surprised by the nature of Stelter\u2019s question, saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know if that\u2019s the press getting it wrong. I\u2019ll leave you to the critique of that, Brian.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.3829787234043\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Brian Stelter asks White House press secretary Jen Psaki about the media&#8217;s coverage of Joe Biden:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What does the press get wrong when covering Biden&#8217;s agenda?&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LPPt0m20ww\">pic.twitter.com\/LPPt0m20ww<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Washington Examiner (@dcexaminer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dcexaminer\/status\/1401573095849095171?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Stelter followed up by asking Psaki what made her feel \u201ccomfortable\u201d and what made her feel \u201cfrustrated.\u201d Psaki said when \u201cthe premise of a question is based in inaccurate information, misleading information, that can be frustrating. I try not to show it too much, try not to let people see me sweat too much \u2014 but occasionally, I have a moment of humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stelter made clear that when he worried how \u201cwe\u201d get things wrong, he mostly means his more conservative, more successful competitors. \u201cThose questions that are based on falsehoods, they come from brands like Newsmax,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy do you call on Fox News and Newsmax?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Psaki went on to say that, while she doesn\u2019t hype her ability to shut down reporters (which her adoring fans call a \u201cPsaki bomb\u201d), she has \u201ca responsibility not to allow the briefing room to become a forum for propaganda, or \u2026 falsehoods or inaccurate information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy best preparation from that was actually serving as the State Department spokesperson when there were representatives of the Russian and Chinese media in the briefing room, asking me questions that were directed by their government. We see that from time to time in the briefing room,\u201d she said, \u201calthough, not every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stelter continued by casting Psaki, who is a former CNN colleague, as a David fighting off a Goliath of disinformation. \u201cFive months in, do you feel you\u2019ve made any progress with that, defeating the lies?\u201d he asked the official spokesperson for the highest office in the government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI try every day to,\u201d Psaki responded.<\/p>\n<p>Stelter then seemingly equated PR flacks and journalists, asking Psaki to give \u201cPR professionals who watch what you do [and] journalists who watch what you do\u201d advice \u201cabout trying to stay close to the truth in this world of lies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stelter closed by trying to get Psaki to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cnn-guest-refuses-to-take-the-bait-contradicts-don-lemon-on-slavery\">take the bait<\/a> about the existential threat posed to the world by the Republican Party. \u201cYou have a daughter going into kindergarten; I have a daughter going into pre-K,\u201d Stelter said to Psaki. \u201cDo you fear [for them], given the craziness we\u2019re seeing from the GOP? Do you fear that for our kids, your kids and mine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Viewers immediately noted the submissive nature of Stelter\u2019s interview.<\/p>\n<p>Trump White House spokesman Sean Spicer, who currently hosts Newsmax TV\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsmaxtv.com\/Shows\/Spicer-and-Co\">Spicer &#038; Co.<\/a>,\u201d responded by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/seanspicer\/status\/1401644961481826313\">tweeting<\/a>, \u201cAlex, I\u2019ll take questions I wish I\u2019d gotten asked for $1,000.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.5581395348837\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Alex, I\u201dll take questions I wish I\u2019d gotten asked for $1000 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ByisZ6qnLG\">https:\/\/t.co\/ByisZ6qnLG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sean Spicer (@seanspicer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/seanspicer\/status\/1401644961481826313?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 6, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Spicer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/seanspicer\/status\/1401578376134004739\">summarized<\/a> Stelter\u2019s entire interview by writing, \u201cAre we doing a good enough job of pushing the White House\u2019s talking points \u2026 can we do better at it?\u201d Similarly, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tedcruz\/status\/1401846444487843846\">paraphrased<\/a> Stelter by writing, \u201cHow can we better serve you, Master?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spicer\u2019s fellow former White House spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany told Fox News\u2019 \u201cOutnumbered\u201d on Monday that terms like \u201cbootlicking, subservient, obsequious\u201d are \u201cjust some of the words critics are using to describe the questions CNN\u2019s Brian Stelter lobbed at White House press secretary Jen Psaki in an interview that aired yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others said the interview had ominous undertones in a society that tasks the media with holding politicians accountable. \u201cI\u2019m not using hyperbole when I say the \u2018interview\u2019 that [Brian Stelter] did with Jen Psaki yesterday should be studied in journalism school. It\u2019s one of the most sycophantic interviews of a state official you\u2019ll ever see,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1401864710891393024\">tweeted<\/a> Glenn Greenwald, founder of The Intercept.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is how state TV functions,\u201d Greenwald said.<\/p>\n<p>The blogger Sister Toldjah at RedState.com <a href=\"https:\/\/redstate.com\/sister-toldjah\/2021\/06\/07\/ted-cruz-sean-spicer-have-best-responses-to-fawning-brian-stelter-interview-with-jen-psaki-n392558\">agreed<\/a>, \u201cPravda would be seriously impressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time a news anchor has shown complete and utter subservience to a Democratic administration. Just after Barack Obama won the 2008 election, then-MSNBC host Chris Matthews <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/blogs\/michaelcalderone\/1108\/Matthews_My_job_is_to_help_this_country.html\">told<\/a> Joe Scarborough on \u201cMorning Joe\u201d that his job is to assure that Obama has \u201ca successful presidency\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p><em>Matthews: You know what?\u00a0 I want to do everything I can to make this thing work, this new presidency work.<\/em><br \/><em>Scarborough:\u00a0 Is that your job?<\/em><br \/><em>Matthews:\u00a0 Yeah, that\u2019s my job.\u00a0 My job is to help this country.<\/em><br \/><em>Scarborough:\u00a0 So, your job as a journalist is to make this presidency work?<\/em><br \/><em>Matthews:\u00a0 To make this work successfully, because this country needs a successful presidency, more than anything right now.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Clinton administration enjoyed similarly adulatory media coverage. In 1993, then-CBS News anchor Dan Rather <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/1993\/6\/21\/19052714\/bad-press-illness-misdiagnosed-clinton-s-had-shots-of-praise-too\">told<\/a> President Bill Clinton that he aspired to do as good a job as co-host of the \u201cCBS Evening News\u201d with Connie Chung as the Clintons had done in their five months as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2015\/06\/bill-and-hill-two-price-one-again-myra-adams\/\">co-presidents<\/a>: \u201cIf we could be one-hundredth as great as you and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been in the White House, we\u2019d take it right now and walk away winners. \u2026 Thank you very much, and tell Mrs. Clinton we respect her, and we\u2019re pulling for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chung and Rather\u2019s partnership lasted less than two years.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-eight years later, CNN has also pitched into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/ratings-crash-cnn-falls-out-of-cables-top-5-networks-in-prime-time\">ratings collapse<\/a> under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/4-reasons-media-ratings-have-plunged-since-joe-bidens-inauguration\">Biden administration<\/a>. <strong>\u201c<\/strong>Stelter has<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/cnn-brian-stelter-miserable-may-reliable-sources\">\u00a0continued to lose viewers<\/a>\u00a0in 2021, new statistics show. He averaged only 836,000 viewers during the month of May, a 9% drop from April viewership and a 53% fall from January, when Biden entered the White House,\u201d Fox News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/softball-interview-brian-stelter-jen-psaki-media\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Media outlets that act as cheerleaders for any administration \u2014 of any party \u2014 lose their audience for the same reason that most incumbents lose elections: They deserve to, because they have stopped serving their constituents. Journalists are tasked with cutting through lies and spin to present its readers with accurate information.
