Ben-Gvir\u2019s complaint came after it was reported that, in \u201ca rare move undertaken by Facebook,\u201d the WhatsApp accounts of least 30 people in Israel were blocked, according to the liberal site, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/tech-news\/.premium-police-complaint-against-facebook-after-jewish-extremist-blocked-1.9851073\"><span>Haaretz<\/span><\/a><span>. One of those affected was Ayala Ben-Gvir, the wife of Itamar Ben-Gvir, and Benzi Gopstein, a \u201clongtime ally\u201d of Ben-Gvir and chairman of the far-right group, Lehava, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/itamar-ben-gvir-files-criminal-complaint-after-wifes-whatsapp-suspended-669335\"><span>The Jerusalem Post<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewishpress.com\/news\/israel\/mk-ben-gvir-files-complaint-against-facebook-ceo-over-illegal-whatsapp-wiretaps\/2021\/05\/26\/\"><span>Jewish Press<\/span><\/a><span> reported, Ben-Gvir called on police to <\/span><span>\u201cinitiate proceedings against the heads of Facebook in Israel for wiretapping private messages, as part of the publications about the blocking of WhatsApp accounts of about 30 people, including [his] wife, and their permanent suspension from the WhatsApp network.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>WhatsApp, a secure messaging app which offers its users end-to-end encryption, is owned by Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ben-Gvir described the alleged wiretapping as a \u201ccriminal offense that carries a prison sentence of up to five years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere is no room here to detail the seriousness of the events and the conduct of the overextension that harms the entire fabric of my wife\u2019s life,\u201d Ben-Gvir said, before explaining that his wife \u201cis a teacher,\u201d and that \u201ccorresponding with students on WhatsApp is a part of her job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a statement discussing the allegations, Ben-Gvir wrote, \u201c<\/span><span>Facebook has crossed all the red lines and there is no doubt that it is time to act against it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFacebook is denying freedom of speech. Intervening in elections in Israel and abroad, but blocking the WhatsApp accounts of about 30 members of Otsma Yehudit, is becoming very serious, as today it proved that Facebook not only harms the freedom of expression, but also allows itself to invade privacy and to enter to privet WhatsApp accounts,\u201d Ben-Gvir added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The statement concluded by discussing the emotional impact of the alleged removal of his wife\u2019s WhatsApp account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI will never forget or forgive on the morning when I found my wife crying, after Facebook deleted her WhatsApp account with the last memories from her sister that have passed away in a young age,\u201d Ben-Gvir wrote. \u201cThere is a consensus in the Knesset today that Facebook crosses borders and I will use this consensus to pass legislation against Facebook and limit its activities in Israel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Conversely, MK Mossi Raz of Meretz \u2014 a left-wing party in Israel \u2014 \u201c<\/span><span>said in a statement that he believed it was the right decision for Facebook to block people who exist on the far-right of the political spectrum,\u201d according to The Jerusalem Post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI hope the justice system will side with Facebook,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
