In an interview on Sunday, he argued being a cop in America these days is tougher than any other time in history.<\/p>\n<p>Bratton went on to say the changes made to law enforcement in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s death have been \u201cphenomenal\u201d. While he supports many of those reforms, he remains frustrated by the movement to defund the police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou need to refund the police,\u201d he expressed. \u201c\u2026The George Floyd Bill, when it comes out, it will effectively force government to spend resources on the essential medicine to fix this thing and police are the essential medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Always great to see some of NY\u2019s Finest in Times Square. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CopsCountPoliceMatter?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CopsCountPoliceMatter<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rZc2NwXkOh\">pic.twitter.com\/rZc2NwXkOh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bill Bratton (@CommissBratton) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CommissBratton\/status\/1397361491343396864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 26, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bratton\u2019s comments come after crime rates in New York City have exploded. In April 2021, overall crime was up 30.4 percent in the city, with felony assaults up 35.6 percent and shootings up 166 percent compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Even controversial Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) has admitted to the problem by saying that the crime in New York City must be dealt with for the well-being of the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat comes before that is people have to feel safe, public safety, otherwise none of it works,\u201d he explained. \u201cYou look at the economic trajectory of New York City.
