Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., announced on Monday that he is \u201cofficially very anxious about climate legislation,\u201d saying that he\u2019s still \u201csensitive\u201d about the Obama administration\u2019s \u201cabandonment\u201d of the issue.<\/p>\n<p>The senator <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWhitehouse\/status\/1401923771762630662\">tweeted<\/a> on Monday morning: \u201cOK, I\u2019m now officially very anxious about climate legislation. I\u2019ll admit I\u2019m sensitive from the Obama climate abandonment, but I sense trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWhitehouse\/status\/1401923773973073922\">He<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWhitehouse\/status\/1401923772802899968\">added<\/a>, \u201cClimate has fallen out of the infrastructure discussion, as it took its bipartisanship detour. It may not return. So then what? I don\u2019t see the preparatory work for a close Senate climate vote taking place in the administration. Why not marshal business support?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whitehouse <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWhitehouse\/status\/1401923775353008143\">accused<\/a> \u201cCorporate America\u201d of being \u201cstill completely AWOL if not worse on climate in Congress. All the major corporate trade associations suck \u2014 all of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWhitehouse\/status\/1401923776560914436\">added<\/a>, \u201cGroups and advocates are quarreling \u2014 My way! No, my way! We need everything, not \u2018my thing.\u2019 Oy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senator, who notes in his Twitter biography that he represents \u201cthe Ocean State,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWhitehouse\/status\/1401923779077586958\">said<\/a> that \u201cOceans are a big part of climate and so far no significant oceans\/coasts effort apparent in administration. Trying to repair that in Senate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He later <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWhitehouse\/status\/1401923780356759555\">said<\/a> that \u201cWe need planning, organizing and momentum. It\u2019s not going to be easy. And it has to work. We are running out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whitehouse also <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenWhitehouse\/status\/1401965586729639943\">posted<\/a> a link to a Washington Post article on rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere despite the COVID-19 pandemic causing widespread lockdowns and travel restrictions, saying \u201cOh, and look what came in the news. Atmospheric CO2 hits new peak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pieter Tans, a senior scientist working for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s Global Monitoring Laboratory, told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2021\/06\/07\/atmospheric-carbon-dioxide-hits-record-levels\/\">Post<\/a> that the news isn\u2019t \u201csignificant in the sense that we are surprised. It was fully expected. It\u2019s significant in that it shows we are still fully on the wrong track.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Corinne Le Qu\u00e9r\u00e9, a research professor at the University of East Anglia specializing in climate change science, added to the newspaper: \u201cThe fact that CO2 concentrations at Mauna Loa data are already so high and are keep going up so fast is disturbing but not surprising because the emissions of CO2 continue to be incredibly high. The concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere will stop rising when the emissions approach zero.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
