We took this action because their article was \u2014 and remains \u2014 defamatory,\u201d wrote Seth Dillon, CEO of The Babylon Bee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.0374331550802\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Yesterday our counsel sent a letter to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nytimes?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@nytimes<\/a> demanding a retraction. We took this action because their article was\u2014and remains\u2014defamatory.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Seth Dillon (@SethDillon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SethDillon\/status\/1400478453615448067?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>Dillon then referenced his response to the original article, from March 2021, writing, \u201cIn an article about Facebook\u2019s difficulty in dealing with satire, the New York Times points to The Babylon Bee as an example of a \u2018far-right misinformation site\u2019 that \u2018sometimes trafficked in misinformation under the guise of satire.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span> The original Times article, which has since been revised, stated:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\" readability=\"10\">\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p class=\"css-axufdj evys1bk0\"><em>But satire kept popping up as a blind spot. In 2019 and 2020, Facebook often dealt with far-right misinformation sites that used \u201csatire\u201d claims to protect their presence on the platform, Mr. Brooking said. For example,\u00a0The Babylon Bee, a right-leaning site, sometimes\u00a0trafficked in misinformation under the guise of satire.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Dillon then explained that The New York Times published an update, which replaced the \u201cexample\u201d sentence in the paragraph with an editor\u2019s note that read: \u201c[Updated March 22, 2021: The Babylon Bee, a right-leaning satirical site, has feuded with Facebook and the fact-checking site Snopes over whether the site published misinformation or satire.]\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>However, Dillon argued that the update \u201cwas no better than the original,\u201d sharing Snopes\u2019 retraction of any insinuation of \u201cdeceptive intent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.609756097561\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The update was no better than the original. We have not, in fact, feuded with Snopes as to whether we publish satire or misinformation. Snopes retracted that insinuation with an editors&#8217; note saying it was never their intent to call our motives into question. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/3s5lw9HyCw\">pic.twitter.com\/3s5lw9HyCw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Seth Dillon (@SethDillon) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SethDillon\/status\/1400478463870578690?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s therefore misleading and malicious to characterize that incident as a feud, as if Snopes ever openly stood by the claim that we are misinformation and not satire,\u201d continued Dillon. \u201cWe cannot stand idly by as they act with malice to misrepresent us in ways that jeopardize our business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The New York Times article in question was published on March 19, 2021. Written by Mike Isaac, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/19\/technology\/political-cartoonists-facebook-satire-irony.html\"><span>piece<\/span><\/a><span> is titled, \u201cFor Political Cartoonists, the Irony Was That Facebook Didn\u2019t Recognize Irony.\u201d While discussing Babylon Bee, two links were provided. The first was to a Snopes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/georgia-lawmaker-go-back-claim\/\"><span>fact-check<\/span><\/a><span>, which includes the following Editors\u2019 note:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p><i><span>Some readers interpreted wording in a previous version of this fact check as imputing deceptive intent on the part of Babylon Bee in its original satirical piece about Georgia state Rep. Erica Thomas, and that was not the editors\u2019 aim. To address any confusion, we have revised some of the wording mostly for tone and clarity. We are in the process of pioneering industry standards for how the fact-checking industry should best address humor and satire.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span>The second link referenced an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/news\/2019\/08\/16\/readers-think-satire-is-real\/\"><span>article<\/span><\/a><span> from The Conversation posted on Snopes titled, \u201cStudy: Too Many People Think Satirical News Is Real.\u201d While the article was doubtlessly critical, the focus was a supposed inability \u2014 among Republicans in particular \u2014 to understand satire. The article acknowledges throughout \u2014 despite its critical tone \u2014 that Babylon Bee is satirical, and even linked to the earlier Snopes fact-check.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Responding in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/notthebee.com\/article\/the-new-york-times-updated-their-babylon-bee-smear-aaand-its-still-garbage\"><span>Not The Bee<\/span><\/a><span> piece titled, \u201cThe New York Times updated their Babylon Bee smear aaaand it\u2019s still hot garbage,\u201d Adam Ford shared a tweet, which read, \u201c<\/span><span>The update is still damning of us, especially given its context in the paragraph and article at large, and still precisely worded to cast doubt on the Bee\u2019s legitimacy as a satire outlet. What a joke.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.375\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The update is still damning of us, especially given its context in the paragraph and article at large, and still precisely worded to cast doubt on the Bee&#8217;s legitimacy as a satire outlet.
