The justices noted that federal law <a href=\"https:\/\/casetext.com\/statute\/united-states-code\/title-8-aliens-and-nationality\/chapter-12-immigration-and-nationality\/subchapter-ii-immigration\/part-v-adjustment-and-change-of-status\/section-1255-adjustment-of-status-of-nonimmigrant-to-that-of-person-admitted-for-permanent-residence\">requires immigrants<\/a> to have been \u201cinspected and admitted or paroled\u201d in the U.S. prior to seeking permanent residency.<\/p>\n<p>Around 400,000 people from 12 countries living in the U.S. are TPS recipients. The program applies to immigrants from countries affected by war or other humanitarian disasters, and protects them from deportation and allows them to legally work in the country, The Associated Press (AP) <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-supreme-court-middle-east-courts-supreme-courts-immigration-d177dae90bcc6d30dcc4e88bd0ae3a6d\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" readability=\"8.9728096676737\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The first and ONLY Supreme Court opinion today is in Sanchez v. The couple applied for and received TPS following a series of earthquakes in El Salvador in 2001, and later sought to \u201cadjust\u201d their status to become permanent residents in 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/07\/politics\/supreme-court-immigrants-green-card-case\/\">according<\/a> to CNN.<\/p>\n<p>Sanchez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/20\/20-315\/153378\/20200908151832806_Sanchez%20Cert%20Petition_FINAL.pdf\">argued<\/a> that he was \u201cinspected and admitted\u201d into the U.S. under federal immigration law when he received protected status, but both the Trump and Biden administrations disagreed.<\/p>\n<p>After U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) denied his application for permanent residency, Sanchez challenged the denial in a federal district court. The court ruled in favor of the couple, though the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2020\/20-315\">reversed<\/a> the lower court\u2019s decision. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/04\/29\/scotus-biden-border-immigration-deportation\/\">(RELATED: SCOTUS Offers Reprieve To Illegal Immigrants Facing Deportation In Border Case)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scotusblog.com\/case-files\/cases\/sanchez-v-mayorkas\/\">took up the case<\/a> in January and oral arguments began in April.
