The Silicon Valley corporation has promised to make changes to its business structure in response.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoritedelaconcurrence.fr\/fr\/article\/lautorite-de-la-concurrence-sanctionne-google-hauteur-de-220-millions-deuros-pour-avoir\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>, France\u2019s Competition Authority accused Google of abusing its \u201cdominant position,\u201d and giving \u201cpreferential treatment\u201d to its own Ad platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>France\u2019s competition watchdog said Google has been promoting its own online advertising services to the detriment of rivals,\u201d reported the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-57383867\"><span>BBC<\/span><\/a><span>, adding that the watchdog had \u201c<\/span>found that Google\u2019s ad management platform<span> for large publishers, Google Ad Manager, favored the company\u2019s own online ad marketplace, Google AdX.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThe decision to sanction Google is of particular significance because it\u2019s the first decision in the world focusing on the complex algorithmic auction processes on which the online ad business relies,\u201d said Isabelle de Silva, chief of France\u2019s Competition Authority, Autorit\u00e9 de la concurrence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThese very serious practices have penalized competition in the emerging online advertising market, and have enabled Google not only to preserve but also to increase its dominant position,\u201d added de Silva, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/06\/07\/google-fined-by-france-for-abusing-online-advertising-position.html\"><span>CNBC<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cThis sanction and these commitments will make it possible to re-establish a level playing field for all actors, and the ability of publishers to make the most of their advertising spaces.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Meanwhile, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire added, \u201c<\/span><span>The practices put in place by Google to favor its own advertising technologies have affected press groups, whose business model is heavily dependent on ad revenues. These are serious practices and they have been rightly sanctioned.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Google\u2019s French legal director, Maria Gomri, responded via a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/around-the-globe\/google-europe\/some-changes-our-ad-technology\/\"><span>blog post<\/span><\/a><span>, saying \u201cWhile we believe we offer valuable services and compete on the merits, we are committed to working proactively with regulators everywhere to make improvements to our products.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Despite the recent wave of fines, Gomri claimed that Google has \u201cworked for years to bring increased transparency to programmatic advertising, including taking steps to simplify our platforms,\u201d including efforts to \u201c[combine] our publisher ad server and ad exchange to become Google Ad Manager and shifting to a unified first price auction in Ad Manager to help reduce complexity and create a fair and transparent market for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span><span>We are always working on improving our ad tech products to help publishers fund their content and businesses and help advertisers efficiently reach customers,\u201d concluded Gomri. \u201cWe recognise the role that ad tech plays in supporting access to content and information and we\u2019re committed to working collaboratively with regulators and investing in new products and technologies that give publishers more choice and better results when using our platforms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As the BBC noted, this is not the first time Google has faced strong financial punishment in Europe. In 2017, Google was fined \u20ac2.42 billion for \u201chindering rivals of shopping comparison websites.\u201d In 2018, the European Union competition authority fined Google \u20ac4.34 billion \u201cfor using its popular Android mobile operating system to block rivals.\u201d In 2019, Google was fined twice; once for \u20ac50 million by the French data regulator CNIL \u201cfor a breach of the EU\u2019s data protection rules,\u201d and once for \u20ac1.49 billion by the European Union \u201cfor blocking rival online search advertisers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
